Position Overview:
As a Nuclear Engineer, you will take on a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and compliance of nuclear operations. Your responsibilities will include leading safety evaluations and technical analyses that support the mission objectives of the Department of Energy.

Key Responsibilities:
In this role, you will:

  • Act as the primary lead for safety basis review teams, conducting complex analyses that culminate in safety evaluation reports.
  • Provide expert technical analysis of Document Safety Analyses for Hazard Category 2 & 3 nuclear facilities.
  • Collaborate with integrated project teams as a safety analyst, ensuring that safety considerations are integrated throughout the project lifecycle.

Employment Conditions:
Applicants must be prepared to meet the following conditions:

  • Subject to random drug testing and must pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Favorable suitability determination is required.
  • Financial disclosure is mandatory.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Q level Security Clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Compliance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD-12) is necessary, which includes providing two forms of identification.

A probationary period may be required, and certification in the DOE's Technical Qualification Program (TQP) must be obtained within 18 months of the start date.

Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, candidates must demonstrate:

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower NNSA Demonstration Project pay band or GS grade level.
  • Experience in evaluating the performance of a Nuclear Criticality Safety program in a management or oversight capacity.

Examples of Specialized Experience:
Qualified candidates will have:

  • Experience leading teams responsible for oversight assessments focused on nuclear criticality safety.
  • Experience in applying and evaluating compliance with Nuclear Criticality Safety regulatory requirements.
  • Experience assessing the overall health of safety management programs in a managerial or oversight role.

Education Requirements:
All applicants must meet the basic educational requirements of the General Engineer occupational series. A degree in professional engineering from an accredited institution is required.
