Job Summary

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a highly skilled Electrical Engineer to join our Controls department. As a key member of our team, you will apply engineering principles to electrical systems, collaborating with other engineers and professionals to ensure the development of integrated systems for safe and reliable power delivery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Apply electrical engineering theories and principles to explore research opportunities in electrical energy generation, storage, transmission, distribution, management, and use.
  • Collaborate with customers to develop system alternatives and analyze alternatives to ensure program requirements are met, including evaluating risks, costs, and other performance measures.
  • Provide technical reviews of design output and obtain appropriate approvals for design output, ensuring design modifications meet technical baseline requirements.
  • Establish and maintain configuration management of assigned systems, maintaining existing drawings and databases.
  • Develop functional and operation requirements, system design descriptions, and test procedures for equipment.
  • Collaborate with other engineers, planners, operations personnel, and partners to ensure proper execution of testing activities, providing first-order data analysis and reporting test status.
  • Evaluate and assess system/equipment performance and history to improve efficiency and reliability.
  • Create designs of experiments, including data acquisition, data collection in laboratories, and appropriate data reduction as dictated by project needs.
  • Analyze experimental results.
  • Mentor junior engineers and other technical personnel in appropriate test procedures, maintenance, and laboratory activities.
  • Oversee the design and maintenance of assigned high-risk electrical systems operations.
  • Direct others or work directly with equipment vendors to diagnose and repair malfunctions and design and specify new equipment to meet customer requirements.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or directly related field from an ABET-accredited institution and 5-9 years relevant experience; or a Master's of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution and 2-6 years relevant experience; or a doctorate and 2-4 years relevant experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy 'Q' clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or directly related field from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Experience in R&D, systems engineering, and programmable logic controller hardware and firmware.
  • Experience with embedded software development in C, FPGA design in Verilog/VHDL, Python script development, digital hardware, and printed circuit board design.
  • Experience conducting experiments with electrical equipment.
  • Diagnostic experience with engine control units and software platforms.
  • Experience working in automotive, maritime, and industrial control machinery system design.
  • Familiarity with electrical engineering, instrumentation and control, and software systems applicable to the design and operation of experimental processes.
