Job Overview

UPMC Rheumatology is seeking a part-time Medical Assistant to support their operations. This role entails a consistent schedule during weekdays, with a commitment of at least 24 hours weekly. The position does not require evening or weekend shifts. The primary duties include patient rooming, vital sign assessment, medication review, appointment scheduling, and providing daily clinical assistance to healthcare providers.

Objective:
To aid physicians in various patient care activities, encompassing clerical, environmental, and organizational responsibilities while ensuring a high level of patient satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the transmission of patient medical records in compliance with HIPAA and relevant regulations.
  • Gather lab/x-ray results, hospital documentation, and referral details. Complete necessary forms and schedule appointments while verifying insurance and patient information. Maintain organized patient charts and fulfill other administrative duties as required.
  • Prepare examination rooms and set up medical instruments according to established protocols. Ensure cleanliness of exam/procedure areas and equipment between patient visits to uphold infection control standards. Maintain inventory of medical supplies and restock as necessary.
  • Coordinate patient flow by checking schedules and escorting patients to exam rooms. Assist patients with mobility, dressing, specimen collection, and preparation for examinations. Record patient history and vital signs, and communicate instructions to patients and their families.
  • Handle incoming calls and provide relevant information, including patient education as directed.
  • Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and basic laboratory tests. Assist physicians during procedures and document patient information accurately in medical records.
  • Adhere to the requirements set by regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA, CLIA, state health departments). Maintain confidentiality of medical records and comply with all UPMC Health System policies.
  • Under physician supervision, administer injectable medications and vaccines when necessary.
A high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory. Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with medical terminology, examination, diagnostic, and treatment room tasks are essential.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR certification is required, adhering to AHA standards that include both theoretical and practical components within the initial employment period.
