Specimen Collection Specialist

Position Overview: Under the supervision of the Branch Manager or Field Leader, the primary role of the Collector is to ensure that specimen collections are performed accurately and punctually. It is essential to maintain a safe and professional atmosphere for both clients and staff while confidently executing all testing procedures, including specimen collection and processing in accordance with established protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Accurate Specimen Collection:
    1. Collect specimens following established protocols in compliance with DOT guidelines (49 CFR-Part 40).
    2. Conduct random and emergency observed urine collections for same-sex clients as necessary.
    3. Gather specimens for drug screenings and other services provided by Quest Diagnostics.
    4. Complete Chain of Custody (COC) forms and Alcohol Testing Forms with precision.
    5. Label specimens as required.
    6. Ensure timely upload, fax, or mail of COC and Alcohol Testing Forms to the designated location within 24 hours.
    7. Package specimens appropriately for transport to the specified laboratory.
    8. Utilize the correct forms for various collection types.
  2. Specimen Transport:
    1. Safely and promptly transport specimens, supplies, equipment, and materials to the appropriate destinations.
    2. Maintain accurate records of each specimen collected and support the Record Deletion process as directed by management.
    3. Provide exceptional customer service to clients.
  3. Compliance with Guidelines:
    1. Adhere to DOT Guidelines for Breath Alcohol and Urine collections.
    2. Maintain all necessary collection logs, accuracy logs, calibrations, and certifications.
    3. Correct any collection errors within a 24-hour timeframe.
    4. Submit accurate time and travel logs as required by management.
    5. Provide accurate expense forms when necessary.
    6. Clock in and out for work assignments properly.
    7. Submit monthly Accuracy Checks to the designated site location.
  4. Professional Conduct:
    1. Comply with departmental and company grooming and dress code policies, maintaining a neat and clean appearance.
    2. Wear the company-issued identification badge at all times during work assignments.
    3. Arrive on time to the designated site within specified guidelines.
    4. Communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and the general public.
    5. Report any discrepancies immediately to the appropriate Manager/Supervisor.
    6. Maintain a polite and courteous demeanor at all times.
  5. Additional Duties:
    1. Ensure that equipment is clean and in good working order, reporting any necessary repairs to management.
    2. Keep necessary supplies stocked and request replenishment as needed.
    3. Collaborate effectively with staff to ensure compliance with dress code, EHS & QA requirements, and customer service standards.
    4. Respond to dispatch calls promptly.
    5. Participate in team activities and special events as requested.
    6. Be flexible with travel (up to a 100-mile radius) and work hours, maintaining a record of availability.
    7. Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.
  6. Qualifications:
    1. Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record.

Experience Requirements:

Required: DOT Certification and any other necessary documentation must be provided prior to a job offer.

Preferred: Certification as a BAT/Urine Collector.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, drive, and lift up to 10 pounds.
  • Strong concentration on tasks at hand.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage patient and employee concerns professionally.
  • Basic computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new software.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills based on established procedures.
  • Capability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
  • Access to a cell phone with texting and emailing capabilities.
  • Access to a computer with scanning, printing, and faxing capabilities.

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Licenses/Certifications: Valid driver's license (Required).
