Overview
Under the guidance of supervisory personnel, oversees and manages the routine operations of wastewater treatment processes at a treatment facility.Key Responsibilities
The essential functions outlined below are core responsibilities typical of this classification. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties associated with any single position within the classification. As such, incumbents may perform one or more of the tasks listed or similar duties not specifically mentioned. Manages the wastewater treatment operations and/or specific sections of the facility, ensuring appropriate adjustments are made to maintain effluent quality and guarantee continuous plant operation. This includes the manual operation of valves, gates, and other equipment while adhering to safety protocols. Conducts thorough inspections of all operational equipment during routine rounds to assess performance and report any deficiencies. Facilitates or supervises the collection of process samples, including their transportation and laboratory analysis, to ensure an effective treatment process. Completes daily operational logs and prepares process data reports. Responds promptly and effectively to any treatment plant disturbances or emergency situations.Additional Responsibilities
Implements special sampling and treatment evaluation initiatives as required. Conducts educational tours of the facility. Performs other related duties as assigned.Working Conditions
May involve exposure to various mechanical equipment, loud noises, and unpleasant odors. Work may be conducted in diverse weather conditions throughout the facility and collection system.Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Basic understanding of the equipment utilized in wastewater treatment processes. Familiarity with wastewater treatment standards in accordance with EPA and NPDES guidelines. Knowledge of the operation and adjustment of mechanical pumps. Awareness of safety principles and practices. Understanding of laboratory measuring devices, instruments, and sampling tools. Ability to interpret various dials, meters, gauges, and DCS equipment status and trends. Competence in maintaining detailed logs of activities. Capability to plan and oversee the work of others in a manner that promotes high performance and morale.Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a standard high school education or equivalent, along with two years of relevant sub-professional experience in engineering, scientific, or treatment plant operations, or two years of labor experience in wastewater treatment operations at a facility designated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.Substitution Options
The following may be substituted for the required experience: Full-time study at an accredited college or university majoring in engineering or science may be considered equivalent to the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Completion of a one-year full-time certificate program for wastewater treatment system operators, such as that offered by the Environmental Resources Training Center (ERTC), may substitute for the required experience. Completion of comprehensive wastewater treatment plant operations courses as defined in the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency wastewater operator certification guide may substitute for three months of the required experience for each course taken, up to a maximum of one year. Possession of a Class 4 or higher certificate of competency in wastewater treatment works operations issued by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency may substitute for one year of the required experience.Promotional Requirements
