Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Operations Specialist to join our team at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for performing technical tasks related to the maintenance and operation of our sewage treatment plant.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist engineering personnel in carrying out wastewater treatment operations, including performing field inspections of operations, facilities, and equipment, and resolving operating problems.
  • Supervise trades personnel in the completion of maintenance activities, ensuring that all work is performed in accordance with District specifications and safety requirements.
  • Assist in planning and directing biosolids receiving, drying, and shipping operations at various sludge drying sites, monitoring activities and site conditions, and determining and recording truck and material weight information.
  • Retrieve, microfilm, duplicate, check, code, and file departmental records, as well as copy and archive contract plans.
  • Set up and maintain surveying equipment, assist in establishing and recording survey information, such as lines and grades, bench marks, and cross sections.
  • Obtain, assemble, and prepare data and maintain records, making routine checks on data, and utilizing departmental information systems to retrieve and enter information and prepare reports.
Other Responsibilities
  • Perform standard tests and checks, ensuring that all equipment is functioning properly and efficiently.
  • Draft and prepare charts and exhibits, providing visual aids to support operational decisions.
  • Maintain supply and equipment inventories, preparing purchase requisitions as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, supporting the overall operations of the District.
Working Conditions

This position will be based in a typical office environment, with occasional exposure to operating mechanical equipment and loud noise or noxious odors. You may be required to work in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system, and may involve working in close proximity to or in conjunction with construction activities and heavy equipment.

Requirements
  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and two years of sub-professional engineering experience.
  • College or technical training beyond high school in engineering or mathematics may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Some knowledge of geometry, college algebra, and trigonometry.
  • Some knowledge of field surveying and related computations.
  • Some knowledge of engineering measuring devices, instruments, laboratory, and sampling equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to use engineering transits and levels.
  • Ability to make working drawings from rough drafts or notes.
  • Ability to utilize word processors, spreadsheets, database managers, and similar applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
