Position Overview:
We are in search of exceptional candidates for the role of Optical Engineer based in Tucson, Arizona. The ideal candidate will spearhead scientific and engineering research initiatives that involve a comprehensive understanding of optical phenomena associated with various sensor systems. This includes developing performance models, designing optical hardware, and employing fundamental mathematical techniques to address scientific and engineering challenges.

Key Responsibilities:
- Design, model, integrate, and evaluate optical sensor systems, including visible/EO and IR cameras, LIDAR systems, and optical testing equipment.
- Develop testing software for controlling prototype EO systems, automating tests, and conducting flight evaluations.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to deliver integrated design solutions for Areté's clientele.
- Assist in requirements development, detailed design, customer presentations, assembly, integration, and field testing.
- Create and implement electro-optic/imaging sensor performance models.
- Analyze data and algorithms to enhance performance.
- Conduct subsystem and system-level testing, including test design, automation, and reporting.
- Engage with system and sensor designers to optimize hardware solutions.
- Present findings to colleagues and clients, and may participate in outdoor field tests.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in optical engineering, physics, or mathematics.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience with a BS/BA or 0+ years with an MS/MA or PhD.
- Strong understanding of optical systems, light propagation, and radiometry.
- Proficiency in scientific programming languages such as Matlab or Python.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and demonstrate strong analytical skills through physics-based modeling and data analysis.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently or in small teams.
- US citizenship is required for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with remote sensing systems (visible, IR, lidar).
- Familiarity with Zemax or similar optical design software.
- Active security clearance is a plus.
