We are looking for exceptional candidates for our Optical Systems Specialist role in Tucson, Arizona.

The ideal candidate will design and implement scientific and engineering research initiatives that typically involve applying a fundamental understanding of optical phenomena related to various sensor systems, creating performance models, designing optical components, and employing basic mathematical techniques to address scientific and engineering challenges.

This position is based in our Tucson office and is an exempt, full-time role.

Key Responsibilities:
Design, model, integrate, and evaluate optical sensor systems, including visible/EO and IR cameras, LIDAR systems, and optical testing equipment. Develop testing software for the control of prototype EO systems, test automation, and flight evaluations. Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to deliver integrated design solutions for Areté's clientele.

Responsibilities encompass assisting with requirements development, concept and detailed design, presentations to clients at SRR, PDR, CDR, assembly, integration, and field evaluations.

Develop and implement electro-optic/imaging sensor performance models. Analyze data, algorithms, and their interactions to enhance algorithm performance. Conduct sub-system and system-level testing, including test design, automation, and reporting. Engage with system and sensor designers to optimize hardware. Present findings to colleagues and clients. May support outdoor field evaluations with occasional travel. Qualifications:
Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in optical engineering, physics, or mathematics. 2+ years of experience with BS/BA, 0+ years of experience with MS/MA or PhD. Understanding of optical systems, light propagation, radiometry, MTF testing. Experience with scientific programming in Matlab, Python, or similar languages. Ability to manage multiple potentially disparate projects simultaneously. Strong analytical skills demonstrated through comprehensive physics-based modeling and data analysis. Solid foundation in fundamental optics, including Fourier transform, beam propagation, radiometry/etendue, imaging, etc.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaborate within small teams. Intellectual curiosity and a commitment to continuous learning. U.S. citizenship is required.


Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with remote sensing systems (visible, IR, lidar). Proficiency in Zemax or similar optical design software. Active security clearance.
