Position Overview:
We are currently seeking exceptional candidates for the role of Optical Systems Engineer. This position is based in our Tucson, Arizona office and is a full-time, exempt role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, model, integrate, and evaluate optical sensor systems, including visible/EO and IR cameras, LIDAR systems, and optical testing equipment.
- Develop software for the control of prototype EO systems, automate testing processes, and support flight testing.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to deliver integrated design solutions for our clients.
- Assist in the development of requirements, concept and detailed design, and present findings to customers at various review stages.
- Create and apply performance models for electro-optic/imaging sensors.
- Analyze data and algorithms to enhance performance.
- Conduct sub-system and system-level testing, including test design, automation, and reporting.
- Engage with system and sensor designers to optimize hardware performance.
- Present findings to colleagues and clients, and support outdoor field tests with occasional travel.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in optical engineering, physics, or mathematics.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience with a Bachelor's degree; 0+ years with a Master's or PhD.
- Strong understanding of optical systems, light propagation, radiometry, and MTF testing.
- Proficiency in scientific programming using Matlab, Python, or similar languages.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent analytical skills demonstrated through advanced physics-based modeling and data analysis.
- Strong foundation in fundamental optics, including Fourier transforms, beam propagation, and imaging principles.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Capability to work independently and collaborate effectively within small teams.
- Intellectual curiosity and a commitment to continuous learning.
- U.S. citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with remote sensing systems (visible, IR, Lidar).
- Familiarity with Zemax or similar optical design software.
- Active security clearance.
