University Police Dispatcher

The University Police Dispatcher plays a critical role in maintaining campus safety and security at American University in Washington, D.C. This position requires strong communication and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities- Receive and respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service from the public, law enforcement, and fire and rescue communities.
- Operate a computer-aided dispatching system to manage service calls, two-way radio dispatching, and information collection.
- Monitor the university security system, including alarms and closed-circuit television cameras throughout campus.
- Dispatch officers to incidents and provide information to police officers, such as criminal histories and wanted checks.
- Provide information to the public and university community as requested.
- Assist with training programs and other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- At least one year of work experience involving public contact, preferably with an emergency response agency or dispatch center.
- General knowledge of the methods of operation of telecommunication equipment and systems.
- Ability to work well in emergency situations and a stressful environment.
- Ability to work shift work and speak distinctly.
- Experience operating a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera system.
- Experience operating an alarm monitoring system.
- Knowledge of emergency response protocols.
