Job Summary

The University Police Dispatcher performs critical telecommunications work in a fast-paced environment, receiving emergency and non-emergency calls for service from the public, law enforcement, and fire and rescue communities. This position requires the ability to work well under stress, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and exercise sound judgment in dispatching patrol officers to incidents.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receive and respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, determining the appropriate response based on location and nature of the problem.
  • Enter, record, track, and update service calls and police activity in the computer-aided dispatch system.
  • Monitor and operate the university security system, dispatching officers to reset active alarms.
  • Monitor and operate the fire alarm monitoring system, dispatching officers to reset active trouble and fire alarms.
  • Monitor university-wide closed-circuit television cameras, assess camera events, and relay information to officers.
  • Provide information to police officers, such as criminal histories, wanted checks, and vehicle registration status.
  • Maintain and update access control records, authorization lists, emergency contact numbers, and alarm codes.
  • Track restricted keys issued for temporary use.
  • Assist with training programs and other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least one year of work experience involving public contact, preferably with an emergency response agency or dispatch center.
  • General knowledge of telecommunication equipment and systems, records management systems, computer-aided dispatch (CAD), and data entry.
  • Ability to work well in emergency situations, work shift work, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to speak distinctly, be courteous, and have tact.
  • Ability to type 35 wpm and satisfactorily complete the University Police Dispatcher training program.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain WALES/National Crime Information Center and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/First Aid Certifications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience operating a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera system.
  • Experience operating an alarm monitoring system.
  • Knowledge of emergency response protocols.
