Job Description

The Government Relations Division is seeking a highly skilled Government Relations Specialist to perform advanced legislative and consultative work. This role involves serving as a liaison between a state agency and government and legislative entities, providing guidance to others, and participating in agency activities related to the legislative session.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Attend legislative hearings and meetings with legislators, legislative staff, and other legislative liaisons
  • Coordinate responses to legislative inquiries and review and edit legislative correspondence
  • Coordinate agency interaction and testimony before legislative committees
  • Effectively communicate agency policies and procedures to elected officials, staff, and other state agency personnel
  • Monitor standing, interim, and special committee schedules and agendas, and communicate relevant information to agency management
  • Assist with preparing reports on newly enacted laws and pending state and federal legislation
  • Assist in drafting bills and amendments for legislative consideration
Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university
  • Full-time experience working two legislative sessions on an elected official's staff, performing legislative research, communicating legislative analysis, legislative monitoring, or closely related activities
  • Extensive knowledge of Texas' legislative process, agency rulemaking, and the appropriations/finance process
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Office, and Texas Legislative Service Software
  • Extensive skill in exercising sound judgment in the release of information
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Full-time experience working three legislative sessions on an elected official's staff, performing legislative research, communicating legislative analysis, legislative monitoring, or closely related activities
