Position Overview

GEICO is in search of a seasoned Lead Software Architect who is dedicated to developing high-efficiency, low-maintenance, and uninterrupted systems and applications. You will play a pivotal role in transforming our insurance operations as we evolve from a conventional IT framework to a technology-driven organization committed to engineering excellence, while fostering a culture of psychological safety and ongoing enhancement.

Role Responsibilities

As a Lead Software Architect, you will collaborate with our Distinguished Engineer and Senior Engineers to innovate and construct new systems, refine and enhance existing solutions, and pinpoint new avenues to leverage your expertise in addressing critical challenges. You will spearhead the strategy and implementation of a technical roadmap aimed at accelerating product delivery and unlocking new engineering capabilities. The ideal candidate possesses extensive technical knowledge in software engineering, cryptography, and the open-source IaaS platform sector.

Key Duties

  • Provide technical and thought leadership across multiple domains within the enterprise.
  • Work closely with product managers, team members, clients, and other engineering teams to tackle our most challenging issues.
  • Develop and implement a technical software development strategy for the IaaS Engineering sector, optimizing for performance and efficiency.
  • Assume responsibility for the quality, usability, and performance of the solutions delivered.
  • Act as a mentor and role model, enhancing the technical expertise and knowledge of our engineering and product community while influencing and educating leadership.
  • Regularly share best practices and enhance processes within and across teams.
  • Analyze costs and forecasts, integrating them into business strategies.
  • Identify and support resource needs, assess operational processes, measure outcomes to ensure success, demonstrate flexibility, and promote continuous learning.
  • Participate in on-call and operational support duties.

Qualifications

  • Strong foundation in software engineering principles.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in complex system design, data pipeline architecture, scalability, performance tuning, and familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Professional experience in software development with at least one modern programming language, such as Go, Python, Java, or Rust.
  • Hands-on experience with public and/or private cloud environments (OpenShift, Kubernetes, Azure, AWS, GCP, etc.).
  • Technical knowledge in security engineering, system and network security, authentication, security protocols, and cryptography.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and related open-source tools like GIT/Jenkins/CircleCI/SonarQube; knowledge of Terraform is a significant advantage.
  • Proven ability to design and implement resilient, scalable, and efficient solutions.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risks.
  • Excellent communication abilities, capable of conveying complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with open-source monitoring tools such as Grafana and Prometheus.
  • One or more of the following certifications are highly desirable:
    • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
    • Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)
    • Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)

Experience

  • 6+ years of professional experience in IaaS.
  • 4+ years of experience with open-source frameworks.
  • 3+ years of experience in architecture and design.
  • 3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service.
  • 1+ years of experience in people management.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience.
