Position Overview

In response to our ongoing expansion, TRC Field Services (FSV) is looking for additional Lead Commissioning Engineers to support our Client Teams nationwide, with a particular focus on the California market.

With a robust team of over 200 skilled utility and industrial commissioning engineers and testing technicians, TRC provides comprehensive, cost-effective solutions to our Electric Utility Clients while offering premier training programs and mentorship opportunities, along with excellent benefits.

We adhere to well-defined procedures and protocols to guarantee safe and thorough planning and testing, effectively managing risks and protecting ongoing operations.

Key Responsibilities

Primary Duties

  • Plan, coordinate, execute, and document all commissioning activities (including pre-commissioning, construction, testing, commissioning, energization, and project closure) for various utility substation protection, control, and power circuits in alignment with TRC's and Client's specifications, budgets, and timelines.
  • Review wiring diagrams, schematics, and engineering documents prior to project initiation and outages.
  • Conduct troubleshooting and problem analysis related to protection and control systems and utility substation equipment, addressing issues such as Application Errors, Drawing Errors, Wiring Errors, Settings Errors, Equipment Malfunctions, and Battery Ground Faults.
  • Participate in project meetings, including kickoff, planning, progress, and lessons learned sessions.
  • Prepare comprehensive daily, weekly, and project completion reports that detail project progress, issues, recommendations, test results, and analyses.
  • Assist in developing project-specific testing and commissioning plans, energization strategies, and other relevant documentation.
  • Identify risks and develop mitigation strategies for utility systems and equipment. Create a Site Risk Assessment to document high-risk construction and commissioning activities, formalizing processes for circuit isolation and restoration to ensure safety for personnel and equipment.
  • Ensure all required tests and commissioning activities are conducted on every piece of equipment or system according to project documents. Confirm that all test results are acceptable, properly recorded, filed, and distributed.
  • Generate detailed test reports for various types of electrical equipment and review and approve these reports.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (preferably Electrical or Power Systems) from an accredited institution, along with 10+ years of relevant experience in testing and commissioning services (Electric Utility experience is preferred, but we will train T-C Engineers with experience in commissioning complex commercial or industrial equipment, including protective relays or other Power Systems Field Engineers with relay knowledge).
  • Proven ability to read and comprehend construction and manufacturer's drawings and specifications, as well as schematic diagrams.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical protection systems, including relay communication; basic understanding of AC and DC schematics, wiring, and one-line and three-line interconnection diagrams.
  • Prior experience with medium and high voltage substation and power plant equipment, with the ability to perform basic apparatus testing and interpret test results under supervision.
  • Solid understanding of substation utility protection and control circuits, with the ability to perform commissioning activities and interpret results under supervision. Basic knowledge of commissioning methods to accurately conduct and document commissioning activities.
  • Experience with Doble Protection Suite and/or ProTest, SEL AcSELerator, Enoserv RTS is highly preferred.
  • Must possess current US work eligibility and a valid driver's license issued by the state of residence in good standing.
  • Willingness to travel out of town for extended periods as required.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends, overtime, holidays, and night shifts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate and negotiate with clients and team members.
