POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Intellectual Property (IP) Counsel will be responsible for providing expert legal guidance to Owens Corning on a wide range of intellectual property issues.

This role offers the chance to collaborate closely with senior management, enhancing the company's strategic goals through effective legal counsel that balances risk and opportunity.


REPORTING STRUCTURE:
Reports to: Director of Intellectual Property
Span of Control: No direct reports

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Located within proximity to a major airport in the Central or Eastern Standard Time zones, with the expectation of regular travel up to 30%.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop comprehensive IP portfolios that align with business objectives and provide a sustainable competitive edge.
  • Formulate and implement effective strategies for IP capture and utilization.
  • Leverage patent landscapes and competitive insights to guide business and innovation initiatives.
  • Oversee external legal counsel in areas such as patent filing, contract drafting, and enforcement matters.
  • Protect and manage trade secret technologies to maintain business advantages.
  • Advise and mentor business partners in identifying and leveraging IP opportunities.
  • Collaborate with various organizational functions to maximize the value of IP in achieving corporate success.
  • Work autonomously while coordinating with the IP team to promote a unified IP strategy.
  • Partner with the legal department to ensure cohesive legal support across the organization.
  • Provide counsel on IP considerations in corporate agreements and transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and licensing agreements.
  • Educate innovation teams on the management of IP and confidentiality rights.
  • Support enforcement actions related to patents, trademarks, and key technologies.
  • Conduct analyses of IP infringement and assist in defensive strategies.
  • Evaluate competitor patent activities and advise on their implications for the business.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
8+ years of extensive experience in intellectual property law, including portfolio management, patent application processes, and legal counseling.

Juris Doctor (JD) degree with eligibility to practice law in at least one state, preferably Ohio.

Must hold registration as a patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Demonstrated success in professional legal activities.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science or Chemistry.
  • Experience in IP counseling within the building materials or manufacturing sectors.
  • Background in IP litigation.

  • Highly motivated with the ability to manage a demanding workload independently.
  • Exceptional communication, advocacy, and analytical abilities to translate complex legal information into actionable business solutions.

  • Proven leadership capabilities to advance the interests of the IP function.

The compensation for this role ranges from $140,000 to $170,000, with the potential for an additional 25% based on relevant qualifications.
