POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Intellectual Property (IP) Counsel is responsible for providing expert legal guidance and support to the various business units of Owens Corning on a wide range of IP issues.

This role presents a unique opportunity to collaborate with senior leadership, aligning legal strategies with the company’s goals by delivering insightful legal advice that balances risk and opportunity.


REPORTING STRUCTURE:
Reports to the Director of Intellectual Property
Span of Control: No direct reports

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Located within proximity to a major airport in the Central or Eastern Standard Time zones, with a requirement for regular travel up to 30% of the time.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop comprehensive IP portfolios that provide a sustainable competitive edge in line with business objectives.
  • Design and implement effective IP capture and utilization strategies.
  • Leverage patent landscapes and competitive analysis to offer actionable insights to business and innovation teams.
  • Oversee external legal counsel in matters related to patent preparation, prosecution, agreements, freedom-to-operate assessments, and enforcement actions.
  • Identify and secure trade secret technologies to maintain business advantages.
  • Guide business and innovation partners in recognizing and capitalizing on IP opportunities.
  • Actively participate in a team dedicated to delivering exceptional intellectual property legal services.
  • Build strong advisory relationships across all organizational functions to enhance the role of IP in achieving corporate success.
  • Work autonomously while collaborating with the IP team to further a cohesive IP strategy.
  • Partner with the legal department to ensure comprehensive legal support throughout the organization.
  • Provide counsel on IP considerations in corporate agreements and transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures, licenses, and strategic partnerships.
  • Educate innovation teams on the management of IP and confidentiality rights.
  • Support IP enforcement and defensive measures related to patents, trademarks, and key technologies.
  • Conduct analyses of IP infringement and assist in enforcement and defensive strategies.
  • Evaluate competitor patent activities and advise on implications for the business.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
8+ years of extensive experience in intellectual property law, including portfolio management, patent application drafting, prosecution, and legal counseling.

Juris Doctor (JD) degree with eligibility to practice law in at least one state, preferably Ohio.

Must be a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Demonstrated success in professional legal activities.


PREFERRED BACKGROUND:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science or Chemistry.
  • Experience in IP counseling within the building materials or manufacturing sectors.
  • Experience in IP litigation.

  • Proven leadership abilities with a focus on advancing the interests of the IP function.

The compensation for this position ranges from $140,000 to $170,000, with the potential for an additional 25% based on relevant qualifications.
