POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Intellectual Property (IP) Counsel is responsible for providing expert legal guidance on a wide range of IP issues affecting Owens Corning's business operations.

This role presents a unique opportunity to collaborate with senior leadership, aligning legal strategies with corporate goals while ensuring a balanced approach to risk management.


REPORTING STRUCTURE:
Reports to: Director of Intellectual Property
Span of Control: No direct reports

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Located within proximity to a major airport in the Central or Eastern Standard Time zones, with a requirement for regular travel of up to 30%.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop comprehensive IP portfolios that provide a sustainable competitive edge aligned with business objectives.
  • Design and implement effective strategies for IP capture and utilization.
  • Leverage patent analysis and competitive insights to guide project trajectories for business and innovation teams.
  • Oversee external legal counsel in matters related to patent filing, prosecution, contract drafting, and IP enforcement.
  • Identify and secure trade secret technologies to maintain business advantages.
  • Advise and mentor business and innovation teams in recognizing and capitalizing on IP opportunities.
  • Foster collaborative relationships across all organizational functions to enhance the role of IP in achieving business success.
  • Work autonomously while coordinating with the IP team to promote a cohesive IP strategy across the enterprise.
  • Collaborate with the legal department to ensure comprehensive legal support throughout the organization.
  • Provide counsel on IP considerations in corporate agreements and transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and licensing deals.
  • Educate teams on the management of IP and confidentiality obligations.
  • Support enforcement actions related to patents, trademarks, and critical technologies.
  • Conduct analyses of IP infringement and assist in enforcement and defensive strategies.
  • Evaluate competitor patent activities and advise on their implications for the business.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
8+ years of extensive experience in intellectual property law, with a strong background in managing IP portfolios, drafting and prosecuting patent applications, and providing legal counsel.

Juris Doctor (JD) degree required, with eligibility to practice law in at least one state, preferably Ohio.

Must hold registration as a patent attorney with the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO).

Demonstrated success in professional endeavors.


PREFERRED BACKGROUND:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science or Chemistry.
  • Experience in IP counseling within the building materials or manufacturing sectors.
  • Background in IP litigation.

The compensation range for this role is between $140,000 and $170,000, with the potential for an additional 25% based on relevant qualifications.
