POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Intellectual Property (IP) Counsel will be responsible for providing expert legal guidance and support to Owens Corning across a wide range of IP issues.

This role presents a unique opportunity to collaborate with key leaders within the organization, enhancing the company's goals by delivering insightful legal counsel that balances risk and reward effectively.


REPORTING STRUCTURE:
Reports to: Director, Intellectual Property
Span of Control: No direct reports

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Located within proximity to a major airport in the Central or Eastern Standard Time zones, with a requirement for regular travel up to 30%.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop comprehensive IP portfolios that provide a sustainable competitive edge aligned with business objectives.
  • Formulate and implement effective IP capture and utilization strategies.
  • Leverage patent landscapes and competitive insights to offer actionable recommendations to business and innovation teams.
  • Oversee external legal counsel in patent preparation, prosecution, drafting agreements, and conducting freedom-to-operate analyses.
  • Identify and secure trade secret technologies to maintain business advantages.
  • Guide business and innovation teams in recognizing and capitalizing on IP opportunities.
  • Actively participate as a member of a team dedicated to delivering top-tier intellectual property legal services.
  • Establish collaborative relationships across various functions to enhance the impact of IP on organizational success.
  • Work autonomously while coordinating with the IP team to advance a comprehensive IP strategy.
  • Collaborate with the legal team to provide integrated legal support throughout the organization.
  • Advise on IP considerations in enterprise agreements and transactions, including structuring and negotiating IP-related deals.
  • Educate innovation teams on the management of IP and confidentiality rights.
  • Support IP enforcement and defensive strategies concerning patents, trademarks, and key technologies.
  • Conduct analyses of IP infringement and assist in enforcement actions.
  • Evaluate competitor patent activities and advise on their implications for the business.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
8+ years of extensive experience in intellectual property law, including portfolio management, patent application drafting, and counseling.

Juris Doctor (JD) degree required, with eligibility to practice law in at least one state, preferably Ohio.

Must be a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Demonstrated success in professional endeavors.


PREFERRED BACKGROUND:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science or Chemistry.
  • Experience in IP counseling within the building materials or manufacturing sectors.
  • Background in IP litigation.

The compensation for this role ranges from $140,000 to $170,000, with potential additional earnings based on qualifications.
