POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Intellectual Property (IP) Counsel is responsible for providing expert legal guidance to Owens Corning on a wide range of intellectual property issues.

This role presents a unique opportunity to collaborate with senior leadership, aligning legal strategies with business goals through informed legal counsel and risk assessment.


Reporting Structure:
Reports to the Director of Intellectual Property
Span of Control: No direct reports

WORK LOCATION:

Must be located within proximity to a major airport in the Central or Eastern Standard Time zones, with a willingness to travel regularly, up to 30% of the time.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop comprehensive IP portfolios that support competitive advantage aligned with business objectives.
  • Formulate and implement effective IP capture and commercialization strategies.
  • Leverage patent analysis and competitive insights to provide actionable recommendations to business and innovation teams.
  • Oversee external legal counsel in patent filing and prosecution, contract drafting, freedom-to-operate assessments, legal opinions, enforcement actions, and opposition proceedings.
  • Identify and secure trade secret technologies to maintain business competitiveness.
  • Guide business and innovation stakeholders in recognizing and leveraging IP opportunities.
  • Actively participate in a team dedicated to delivering exceptional intellectual property legal services.
  • Establish collaborative relationships across various organizational functions to enhance the role of IP in achieving corporate success.
  • Work autonomously while coordinating with the IP team to advance a cohesive IP strategy.
  • Collaborate with the legal department to provide integrated legal support across the organization.
  • Advise on IP considerations in corporate agreements and transactions, including structuring and negotiating IP-related deals such as acquisitions, divestitures, licenses, and strategic partnerships.
  • Educate innovation teams on the management of IP and confidentiality obligations.
  • Support enforcement actions and defensive measures related to patents, trademarks, and critical technologies.
  • Conduct analyses of IP infringement and assist in enforcement and defensive strategies.
  • Evaluate competitor patent activities and advise on implications for the business.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Requirements:
8+ years of extensive experience in intellectual property law, including managing and developing IP portfolios, drafting and prosecuting patent applications, providing legal opinions, and offering strategic counsel.

Juris Doctor (JD) degree required, with eligibility to practice law in at least one state, preferably Ohio.

Must be a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Demonstrated success in professional endeavors.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science or Chemistry.
  • Experience in IP counseling within the building materials or manufacturing sectors.
  • Background in IP litigation.

The compensation range for this position is $140,000 to $170,000, with potential additional earnings based on relevant qualifications.
