Job Summary
The Patient Access Coordinator is responsible for ensuring accurate and efficient registration of patients in the Emergency Department. This role requires strong communication and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect and verify patient demographic and insurance information
- Use eligibility application to verify insurance coverage and capture relevant information
- Interpret insurance responses and apply contractual benefits to services rendered
- Discuss financial obligations with patients and collect payment via cash, credit card, or check
- Explain regulatory forms and answer patient questions, obtaining signatures as necessary
- Manage electronic health records and scan or upload documents as required
- Comprehend federal, state, and third-party payer regulations related to hospital registration
- Work in multiple systems to complete accurate registrations and support clinical workflow
- Review services rendered to ensure accurate setting of care and advise physician staff as necessary
- Provide estimates for services and contact patients with missing or incomplete information
- Secure encounters with tight timeframes and manage high patient volume
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Associate's degree in a relevant field preferred
- 3-5 years of experience in a hospital or physician office required
- Strong computer skills and insurance knowledge
- Proven customer service skills and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to learn and apply new information, and remain composed under pressure
- Good judgment and problem-solving skills, with ability to escalate issues as necessary
- Team-oriented work ethic and ability to work in a collaborative environment
