Our Middle Market division is in search of a proficient Sales Underwriting Specialist to enhance our operations in the Upstate New York region. This role is classified as Full-time and Exempt, with a Hybrid work arrangement.


Key Responsibilities:


As a Sales Underwriting Specialist, you will be tasked with:

  • Identifying, soliciting, underwriting, and managing new and renewal Middle Market accounts that align with our growth objectives.
  • Employing advanced technical, sales, and analytical skills to provide tailored insurance solutions that assist clients in managing their risks.
  • Demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of Hanover's strategies and appetites, utilizing both internal and external data to make informed risk decisions.
  • Operating within a broad Letter of Authority for underwriting decisions while managing a complex portfolio of business.

Technical Underwriting Expertise:

Utilize advanced underwriting principles, including:

  • Risk selection and exposure identification.
  • Coverage implications and loss analysis.
  • Employing underwriting tools to adhere to guidelines.
  • Documenting files in accordance with best practices and regulatory standards.

Portfolio Management:

Effectively manage your assigned portfolio to meet:

  • Gross written premium targets.
  • Profitability and retention goals.
  • New business development and portfolio management objectives.

Analyze key metrics to uncover trends that may lead to new business opportunities while ensuring profitable growth.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 3-7+ years of underwriting experience, specifically with Middle Market accounts.
  • Proven track record in cultivating agency relationships that yield profitable business.
  • Specialization in one or more Industry Segments may be beneficial.
