About the Role: The Construction Technician-Line Worker plays a vital role in the installation, repair, and upkeep of poles, cables, and conduits. Responsibilities include:

  • Installing aerial and buried cables along with necessary hardware to facilitate project completion.
  • Running fiber optic, copper, and other essential cables within the telecommunications sector, both above ground and within underground infrastructure, such as manholes.
  • Ensuring crew safety by directing procedures, road safety, and manhole safety, while participating in safety meetings as required.
  • Maintaining material inventory and conducting DOT vehicle inspections.
  • Operating heavy machinery and performing additional tasks as assigned, including splicing copper and fiber cables.

This position may require working on weekends, holidays, standby, and unscheduled hours, with potential overtime. Travel may exceed 50% of the year based on business needs. This is a safety-sensitive role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, repair, and maintain poles and cables.
  • Set up services for customers by installing, connecting, testing, or adjusting equipment as necessary.
  • Measure signal strength at utility poles using electronic testing equipment.
  • Inspect and test lines or cables, documenting and analyzing results to evaluate transmission characteristics and identify faults.
  • Access specific areas to string lines or install terminal boxes, using bucket trucks or climbing poles and ladders.
  • Pull cables from large reels mounted on trucks and lay underground cables in trenches or conduits as required.
  • Utilize various construction equipment to complete installations, including digger derricks and trenchers.
  • Understand and interpret staking sheets and blueprints, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Participate in engineering, permit, and construction processes as necessary.
  • Perform routine maintenance and address route issues, including cleanup and sign placement.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to pass pole climbing certification.
  • Capacity to lift, push, or pull up to 75 pounds.
  • Willingness to work in all weather conditions year-round.
  • Capability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
  • Flexibility to work an on-call schedule, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Valid driver's license and minimum qualifications to obtain a CDL.
  • Ability to pass DOT certification and travel as required.
  • Strong time-management skills and attention to detail for accurate paperwork completion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in pole climbing and completion of OSHA 10 Hour Safety Course.
  • Proficiency in operating various construction equipment.
  • One year of experience in outside plant construction, including installation and maintenance of poles and cables.

Physical Requirements:

  • Standing, walking, and climbing are continuous throughout the workday.
  • Frequent exposure to cold, heat, dampness, heights, and vibration.
