Job Overview

The Department of Social Services (DSS) encompasses the administrative divisions of the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). Role of General Support Services

General Support Services (GSS) / Facilities Operations (FO) is seeking a Custodian II to serve as Building Custodian. This role involves:

  • Overseeing custodial personnel across various titles, including assistant building custodians, junior building custodians, and custodial assistants responsible for cleaning and maintenance tasks.
  • Conducting inspections of the building to assess the adequacy of cleaning and maintenance services, documenting any deficiencies and necessary repairs.
  • Supervising and potentially participating in minor repairs, while reporting conditions that require mechanical services.
  • Managing the requisition of fuel and janitorial supplies, ensuring proper storage and issuance.
  • Coordinating the opening and closing of the building to ensure the security of city property.
  • Monitoring the work performed by external contractors.
  • Arranging and supervising the relocation of furniture as needed.
  • Enforcing safety regulations within the building.
  • Preparing, maintaining, and submitting reports on custodial activities, incidents, accidents, and unusual occurrences.
  • Providing training and organizing training sessions for staff.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Two years of full-time satisfactory experience in building cleaning and maintenance.
  • For Assignment Level II, candidates must have three years of relevant experience.
  • For Assignment Levels III and IV, four years of relevant experience is required.
