Job Title: Superintendent Engineer

Liberty Maritime is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Superintendent Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our Engineering Department, you will be responsible for overseeing the operation, repair, maintenance, and improvement of our vessels.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement cost-effective maintenance and repair schedules for assigned vessels.
  • Ensure vessels are operated in accordance with company procedures and manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Supervise and coordinate all maintenance and repair activities on company vessels, ensuring that required materials are available and work is completed within budget and time constraints.
  • Supervise shipboard technical staff to ensure that each ship's maintenance is being monitored, budgets are maintained, and all relevant class and flag state documentation is up to date.
  • Work closely with the vessel's Chief Engineer to optimize fuel and cylinder oil consumption.
  • Assist in investigating hull and machinery casualties to determine cause, remedy, and future preventative measures, and coordinate the completion of all damage surveys.
  • Provide technical advice on contracts into which the company may enter.
  • Verify that ship's senior officers are following the company's SMS, review their procedures and operations during time spent on board, and issue Non-Conformity or Observation reports as required.
  • Implement maintenance policy regarding division of work between the crew and work performed by shore-side contractors.
  • Review and recommend changes in the intervals for machinery maintenance aboard vessels, monitor and maintain planned maintenance programs, and ensure compliance with program goals.
  • Maintain records of outstanding and pending repairs for future planned maintenance activities.
  • Accompany the vessel on passages or during in-port shifts to survey the ship and its operation while underway, evaluating the ship and the crew's performance and assisting, training, and evaluating ship's officers not familiar or knowledgeable about the vessel's operation or the ship's equipment.
  • Interface with U.S.C.G., A.B.S, and other regulatory bodies and/or agencies.
  • Update any required vessel documents.
  • Schedule and carry out surveys/inspections by regulatory bodies.
  • Review spare parts and stores requisitions for assigned vessels, maintain repair records, and review vessel inventory, maintaining proper inventory levels for critical spares.
  • Evaluate engineering and deck officers, recommend personnel for promotion and advancement, and fill out personnel evaluation forms on senior officers.
  • Determine and recommend the scope of drydock repairs, write the shipyard specifications as directed by the Vice President of Engineering, prepare and recommend items to be included in the annual budget and material to be purchased for the next repair period.
  • Review pending legislation and equipment requirements to keep the vessels in compliance with national and international requirements, review the supplier's documentation, and prepare reports for review and budgeting.
  • Communicate frequently with the Vice President of Engineering, keeping him updated on the vessel's condition, operation, any on-going repairs, and intended activities.
  • Assist with new building engineering tasks, shipyard selection, specification and plan review, equipment maker selection, trials, delivery, etc.
  • Back up and support other Engineering Department personnel during any emergency situation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Marine engineering degree from a maritime academy.
  • Engineering license.
  • Sailing experience.
  • Ship repair experience.
  • Extensive travel (25%) required.
