The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is dedicated to achieving high standards, ensuring that every student—across all schools and neighborhoods—receives a premier educational experience from early childhood through to high school graduation, equipped for both college and career.

In accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), an occupational therapist plays a crucial role in delivering services to students within their least restrictive environment, facilitating their engagement with special education programs.

Occupational therapy services focus on enhancing performance in an educational setting, which includes classroom participation, self-care abilities, vocational readiness, recreational activities, and social interaction skills.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Improving the functional use of hands and visual attention through stable positioning.
  • Enhancing the functional use of limbs by utilizing specialized equipment.
  • Boosting learning capabilities through sensorimotor activities that target motor planning, attention, and behavioral challenges.
  • Ensuring the competency and safety of educational personnel regarding body mechanics, handling techniques, motor skills, and classroom modifications.

To qualify, the occupational therapist must successfully complete the National Board Certification for Occupational Therapy.

Qualifications and Experience:

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in occupational therapy from a program accredited by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

The role involves collaboration with students, school staff, parents, community organizations, administrators, and healthcare professionals to ensure effective service coordination.

Additionally, the occupational therapist will work on:

  • Facilitating the transition from school to community, empowering students to achieve independence as outlined in their goals.
  • Documenting all services provided in a timely manner, adhering to the guidelines set by the Office of Diverse Learner Supports and Services.
  • Evaluating and recording student progress in alignment with ILOTA and relevant district, state, and federal regulations.

Responsibilities also include addressing personal care needs, social interaction skills, processing abilities, play, community integration/work, graphic communication, assistive technology requirements, and environmental adaptations necessary for accessing the educational environment through collaboration with school personnel.

Participation in clinical educational opportunities for occupational therapy students is encouraged.

All practices must comply with the professional, ethical, and legal standards as defined by the American Occupational Therapy Association, and the occupational therapist will provide direct supervision to occupational therapy assistants in accordance with the Illinois Occupational Therapy Practice Act.
