Big Spring, Texas, United States Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services Full time
Job Overview:

Are you seeking a fulfilling career where you can enhance your skills while making a significant difference in the lives of others? At the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services, we value a culture of teamwork, dependability, and inclusivity, creating an environment where every employee feels appreciated and supported.

If you are passionate about delivering compassionate, innovative, and personalized care, we invite you to consider the position outlined below.

In this role, you will work under the guidance of the Chief Nurse Executive/Nurse Administrator/Assistant Chief Nurse Executive, where you will observe, assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate patient care outcomes while meticulously documenting all aspects of care provided.

You will possess specialized knowledge relevant to the patient demographics served, coordinate scheduling within your designated areas, and manage the service area during your assigned shifts with a supportive supervisory approach. You may also supervise, mentor, and evaluate other nursing personnel, collaborating closely with Nurse Coordinators, charge nurses, and Mental Health Supervisors/Specialists to ensure seamless continuity of care.

Flexibility in your work schedule is essential, as you will have the autonomy to exercise initiative and independent judgment while providing direct nursing care to patients as necessary. Note: Duties, work location, and shift patterns may be adjusted by administration to meet hospital needs, and exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials may occur.

All shifts available.

Unit selection will be discussed during the interview.

Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance is required, and you may be expected to work specific shifts or rotating schedules, including extended shifts and/or overtime, in accordance with agency leave policies. Additional responsibilities include:

  1. Assessing the health and mental status of patients upon admission and throughout their stay, documenting all assessments, planning, interventions, and evaluations in patient records to prioritize and plan therapeutic nursing care.
  2. Performing CPR and Heimlich maneuvers in accordance with American Heart Association standards.
  3. Providing direction and coordination of staffing and patient care activities on assigned units, addressing performance issues promptly, and maintaining accurate documentation of interventions.
  4. Facilitating a smooth admission and transfer process by collaborating with admissions staff and unit personnel to ensure appropriate patient status and triage when necessary.
  5. Implementing medical staff orders and nursing interventions in line with established nursing care standards and hospital policies.
  6. Participating in investigations related to client abuse and neglect.
  7. Implementing special precautions as ordered, explaining and documenting rights restrictions, and executing restraint/seclusion procedures to ensure patient safety.
  8. Upholding patient rights and protecting patients from self-harm or harm to others.

You will also attend mandatory training to maintain staff competence and development, participate in ongoing education and training programs tailored to meet the diverse needs of patients, and monitor adherence to treatment, intervention, and protection strategies (TIPS) during episodes of patient restraint.

Open communication with the CNE/Assistant CNE/Nurse Administrator/Nurse Manager is crucial to stay informed and relay important information to staff on assigned units.

Additionally, you may be required to participate in disaster response and recovery efforts or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may necessitate alternate shift patterns or locations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Familiarity with recognized ANA Nursing Standards.
  • Understanding of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Supervisory and management capabilities.
  • Proficiency in performing CPR, PMAB, and emergency care in medical or psychiatric emergencies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective interaction with staff, patients, and families.
