The Nurse I (Staff Nurse) is responsible for performing essential nursing duties at a foundational level within a state hospital setting, under the guidance of a Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager (Nurse II/III).
The Nurse I observes patient behavior and status, providing reports to the psychiatrist and other recovery team members as necessary. They execute nursing interventions as outlined in the multidisciplinary recovery plan, administer medications as prescribed, and maintain accurate medication administration and controlled substance records in accordance with facility policies. Training of other staff members may also be required, as requested. This role operates under moderate supervision, allowing for limited initiative and independent judgment.
Key Responsibilities:
Regular attendance is essential, and the Nurse I may be required to work specific shifts, rotating schedules, extended hours, or overtime in line with agency policies. The Nurse I will:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' nursing care needs, encompassing physical, behavioral, psychiatric, and social aspects.
- Observe and document patient behavior and status, communicating effectively with team members, including the attending psychiatrist.
- Collaborate with other recovery team members to develop or contribute to individualized recovery plans based on assessment data.
- Provide health education and coping strategies to patients and their families to address their needs.
- Utilize one-on-one counseling techniques to assist patients in identifying anxiety and developing coping mechanisms.
- Initiate and implement nursing interventions tailored to the specific patient population, adhering to established standards of care.
- Administer medications and treatments as directed by physicians, ensuring compliance with facility policies regarding medication administration (MAR) and controlled substances.
- Establish and maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients.
- Provide training to other staff on psychiatric nursing principles, unit routines, and milieu management.
- Monitor the appropriate use of restraint or seclusion to ensure the safety of both patients and staff.
Other responsibilities may include participating in disaster response and recovery efforts or supporting Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may necessitate alternate shift assignments or locations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiarity with nursing techniques and procedures.
- Understanding of medical diagnoses and treatment protocols.
- Knowledge of accepted medical treatment programs.
- Awareness of community health principles and nursing care practices.
- Proficiency in patient care and treatment.
- Competence in using computers and relevant software.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
