The Nurse I (Staff Nurse) engages in foundational to routine nursing responsibilities at a competent level within a state hospital, working under the guidance of the Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager (Nurse II/III).

This role involves conducting thorough assessments of patients' nursing care requirements utilizing specialized skills in an inpatient psychiatric environment. You will identify nursing diagnoses or problem lists and develop an initial care plan based on assessment findings. Additionally, you will establish unit routines and foster a therapeutic environment.

You will observe patient behavior and status, reporting relevant information to the psychiatrist, other recovery team members, and the supervising nurse as necessary.

You will implement nursing interventions as outlined in the multidisciplinary recovery plan, administer medications as prescribed, and maintain accurate medication administration and controlled substance records in accordance with facility policies. Training of other staff members may also be part of your responsibilities, as needed. This position operates under moderate supervision, allowing for limited initiative and independent judgment.

Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance is essential, and you may be required to work specific shifts or, at times, a rotating schedule, extended shifts, and/or overtime in line with agency leave policies.


Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' nursing care needs, encompassing physical, behavioral, psychiatric, and social aspects.

Observe and document patient behavior and status, communicating with other team members, including the attending psychiatrist, as necessary.

Collaborate with other recovery team members to develop or contribute to individualized recovery plans based on assessment data.

Provide individual or group health education and coping strategies to patients and/or families to address their needs.

Utilize one-on-one counseling techniques in therapeutic interactions with patients to help them identify anxiety and develop coping mechanisms.


Initiate and implement nursing interventions tailored to the specific population, adhering to appropriate standards of care.

Administer medications and treatments as directed by the physician, ensuring compliance with facility policies regarding medication administration (MAR) and controlled substances.


Create and maintain a therapeutic environment that ensures safety and promotes recovery for patients.

Provide training to other staff members in psychiatric nursing principles, unit routines, and milieu management.

Ensure the appropriate use of restraint or seclusion to safeguard both patients and staff members.


Perform additional duties as assigned.

These duties may include participating in or supporting the agency's responsibilities for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may necessitate alternate shift patterns or locations.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
