Raleigh, North Carolina, United States UNC Health Full time

Join a diverse and inclusive organization dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of the communities we serve.

The Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) is committed to providing immediate assistance in situations where individuals exhibit acute behavioral changes and pose risks to themselves or others.

To effectively manage these situations, BERT team members collaborate with healthcare professionals, security personnel, and nursing staff to ensure that individuals receive the necessary medical and psychiatric care.

The BERT team is composed of a Registered Nurse (RN) and Behavioral Health Technicians (BHT), available around the clock to respond to incidents across various settings, including inpatient areas, emergency departments, and outpatient clinics.

Position Overview:

The Psychiatric Care Technician II role integrates direct patient care with administrative and educational responsibilities, aimed at promoting the professional development of support staff in psychiatric units.

This leadership position requires adaptability and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Under the guidance of the RN, the BHT II exemplifies the delivery of a safe, supportive, and therapeutic environment for psychiatric patients, provides hands-on patient care, leads therapeutic group sessions, and contributes to the multidisciplinary team in developing and implementing care plans for patients on the assigned unit.

In collaboration with the CNIV and Nurse Manager, the BHT II assists in overseeing, scheduling, orienting, and providing ongoing education for support staff, while modeling exceptional patient care in line with recovery principles.

Key Responsibilities:

Maintain a minimum of 24 hours of direct patient care weekly, with administrative duties adjusted based on unit needs and staffing levels.

The BHT II partners with CNIVs and Nurse Managers to coordinate staff scheduling, orient new personnel, and conduct regular staff meetings on the unit.

As an expert in de-escalation techniques, the BHT II is prepared to coach and support fellow staff members to prevent and manage escalating situations in both inpatient and residential settings.

Engage with patients individually and in small groups, facilitating sessions that encourage maximum participation and interaction, tailored to the functional levels of group members.

Oversee the ordering, restocking, and maintenance of unit supplies, ensuring patient safety through appropriate protective measures.

Participate in restraining patients when necessary, monitor individuals in seclusion or restraint, and conduct mock behavioral codes to ensure unit preparedness for emergencies.

Actively engage in at least two quality improvement initiatives annually, collaborating with the CNIV and Nurse Manager to facilitate staff meetings on the unit.

As the unit safety coordinator, the BHT II ensures compliance with safety protocols, submits biannual safety reports, and maintains records of unit work orders to uphold a secure environment.

After completing training, demonstrate proficiency in the Involuntary Commitment process, assist patients with reality orientation, and support behavior modification plans.

Provide informal therapeutic support to patients and families, employing verbal de-escalation strategies with potentially aggressive individuals, and facilitate age-appropriate activities for children.

Document patient observations and significant changes in condition, assist in gathering admission data, and orient patients and families to the facility.

Deliver personal care as outlined in care plans, including assistance with daily living activities, and monitor vital signs and other delegated measures.

Reinforce patient education provided by the RN or physician, ensuring understanding and compliance.
