Raleigh, North Carolina, United States UNC Health Care Full time

Join a diverse and inclusive organization dedicated to enhancing the health and wellness of the communities we serve.

The Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) is committed to providing immediate assistance in situations where patients, visitors, or staff display acute behavioral changes and at-risk behaviors.

To manage these situations effectively, BERT team members work collaboratively with healthcare professionals, hospital security, and nursing teams to ensure that the affected individuals receive the necessary medical and/or psychiatric care.

The BERT team is composed of a Registered Nurse (RN) and Behavioral Health Technicians (BHT), available around the clock, every day of the week.

Role Overview:
The Psychiatric Care Technician II position combines hands-on patient care with administrative and educational responsibilities aimed at promoting the professional development of support staff in inpatient and residential psychiatric settings.

This leadership role demands adaptability and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Under the guidance of the RN, the BHT II exemplifies the delivery of a safe, supportive, and therapeutic environment for psychiatric patients, provides direct patient care, leads therapeutic group sessions, and contributes to the multidisciplinary team in formulating and implementing care plans for all patients in the assigned unit.

In collaboration with the CNIV and Nurse Manager, the BHT II assists in overseeing, scheduling, orienting, and providing ongoing education for support staff, while demonstrating exemplary patient care aligned with recovery principles.

Key Responsibilities:

Maintain a minimum of 24 hours of direct patient care weekly, with administrative duties as permitted by unit staffing levels and patient acuity.

The BHT II collaborates with CNIVs and Nurse Managers to coordinate the scheduling and orientation of new support staff, as well as to conduct regular meetings on their designated unit.

As an expert in de-escalation techniques, the BHT II is prepared to coach and support other staff members to prevent and mitigate escalating situations in both inpatient and residential environments.

Engage with patients on both individual and small group levels, facilitating sessions that encourage maximum participation and interaction, tailored to the functional levels of group members.

Oversee the procurement, replenishment, and upkeep of unit supplies.

Ensure patient safety by providing protection and control as necessary. Participate in the restraint of combative patients when required, and monitor patients in seclusion or restraint. Conduct mock behavioral codes to maintain unit readiness for emergencies.

Actively engage in at least two quality improvement initiatives annually.

Collaborate with the CNIV and Nurse Manager to facilitate meetings for support staff on the unit. Assist the charge nurse in patient assignment as needed.

As the unit safety coordinator, the BHT II ensures a secure environment by maintaining departmental safety plans, submitting biannual safety reports, completing necessary safety training, and reporting any injuries or hazards in accordance with departmental policies.

After training, demonstrate proficiency in the Involuntary Commitment process.

Support patients in reality orientation, engage in behavior modification plans, provide informal therapeutic support to patients and families, de-escalate potentially aggressive patients verbally, assist in the physical management of aggressive or out-of-control patients, facilitate age-appropriate activities for children, and monitor therapeutic milieu activities to meet the emotional and safety needs of patients.

Observe, collect, and document patient information during care, promptly reporting significant changes in patient conditions to a registered nurse or physician.

Assist in gathering routine admission data from patients and their families, orienting them to the facility, and contributing data during team discussions to aid in developing therapeutic plans and objectives.

Provide direct personal care to patients as outlined in their care plans, including assistance with daily living activities such as bathing, personal hygiene, feeding, and dressing.

Assist patients with mobility, range of motion exercises, transfers, and ambulation. Record vital signs and other delegated measures as required.

Monitor patient progress daily, reporting any significant changes in condition or behavior to the supervising RN.

Reinforce routine education provided by the registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding of instructions. Distribute educational materials as requested by patients or healthcare providers.

Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED)

Licensure/Certification:
  • Listed as a Nursing Assistant I by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Experience:
