POSITION OVERVIEW
This role demands a high level of technical expertise and the application of that knowledge to laboratory testing, clinical significance, and advanced problem-solving capabilities. The position acts as a departmental resource and is accountable for ensuring compliance with all relevant laboratory accreditation and regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA 88, JCAHO, CAP, OSHA).

All responsibilities must be executed in accordance with established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation mandates, as well as applicable professional standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Execute all duties of Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) as outlined by the department, demonstrating a high level of proficiency. Oversee operational leadership and workflow management for the section/shift. Integrate extensive technical knowledge and clinical relevance into daily departmental activities. Address complex problem-solving related to technical, computer, interdepartmental, and quality challenges. Under the guidance of the Supervisor and/or Technical Director, implement system technical initiatives within their designated area. Provide on-site supervision (including scheduling, managing daily workflow, and contributing to assessments or disciplinary actions) in the absence of the section supervisor.

2. Prioritize quality by reviewing documentation and ensuring adherence to all quality control and assurance protocols. Maintain quality control and instrumentation maintenance records, ensuring compliance with the standards set by accrediting and licensing bodies. Collaborate with the Supervisor, Administrative and Technical Directors, and Technical Specialist to implement new QC/QA policies and continuous quality improvement initiatives in line with the Quality System. Actively engage in department and LSA/SQL System quality assurance efforts. Ensure compliance with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements for the laboratory and participate in preparations for on-site accreditation evaluations.

3. Identify opportunities for enhancement and contribute to improving the financial performance of the department and the SQL/LSA System to reduce costs, boost productivity, and enhance service delivery. Monitor inventory levels and escalate related issues for timely resolution. Assist in the development of cost analysis models.

4. Support basic personnel management, including involvement in the selection, training, development, and coaching of staff under the direction of the Supervisor or relevant Director. Participate in new employee orientation, training, and competency assessments. Provide input for competency evaluations and annual reviews for employees within designated timelines. Take an active role in implementing and ensuring staff compliance with competency program requirements. Demonstrate initiative and motivation to seek opportunities to contribute to departmental projects. Coordinate and engage in at least two special projects annually within the department or SQL/LSA System, alongside other miscellaneous departmental responsibilities.

5. Act as a communication liaison for on-site and System-related matters. Facilitate access to additional System resources when necessary. Collaborate closely with on-site management to integrate departmental activities with broader site initiatives. Foster teamwork and emphasize customer service in interactions with colleagues. Exhibit preceptor and coaching capabilities while promoting a constructive environment that encourages learning and development. Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in medical laboratory science/medical technology, OR
    • Bachelor’s degree in chemical or biological science (transcripts may be reviewed to determine eligibility) AND certification (MLS or categorical).
  • Two (2) years of experience in nonwaived testing within the designated specialty/sub-specialty area.

  • MLS Certification
  • Additional relevant education and/or experience.
