Ultrasound Technologist Job Description

Advocate Aurora Health is seeking a skilled Ultrasound Technologist to join our team in Hickory Hills, Illinois.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Position patients and select technical factors and equipment to obtain high-quality scans.
  • Operate portable ultrasound equipment to perform procedures as requested throughout the hospital.
  • Assist physicians with recommendations for optimal studies by suggesting technical factors for procedures.
  • Deliver patient care and maintain department standards of continued quality improvement.
  • Prepare ultrasound rooms with necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Utilize phone etiquette and maintain patient confidentiality according to hospital policies.
  • Maintain a timely flow of patients in room assignments or work areas.
  • Treat patients and customers with respect and compassion.
  • Transport patients when indicated to meet customer needs.
  • Document department records, including inventories of supplies and patient statistics.
  • Maintain correct patient records and assemble daily patient schedules.
  • Prepare ultrasound rooms and operate Hospital Information Computer Systems as required.
  • Obtain patient history to provide radiologists with adequate information for film interpretation.
  • Work closely with radiologists to ensure optimal outcomes for each procedure.
  • Comply with established Accrediting Organization and hospital safety standards to ensure patient and staff well-being.
  • Maintain annual CPR certification and operate equipment safely in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Use standard Precautions to protect self from bodily fluid exposure.
  • Maintain hospital department disaster, fire, and evacuation policy.
  • Promote patient safety by reporting issues through established channels and participating in safety initiatives.
  • Attend mandatory in-services and meetings.
  • Stay current with ultrasound skills and new developments in the field.
  • Provide instruction and assistance as required by students or fellow technologists.
Requirements:
  • ARDMS Registry eligible.
  • ARDMS Registry to be successfully completed within the first year of employment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Possess high technical knowledge to perform specialized U/S studies with minimal assistance from radiologists.
  • Able to make diagnostic judgments when scanning and present them to radiologists for interpretation.
  • CPR Certification.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Ability to adjust to flexible hours at minimal notice.
  • Ability to work odd hours (late hours on-call).
  • Ability to respond to emergency call-back in minimal time.
  • Ability to stand for long periods.
  • Ability to constantly view small CRT screens during exams.
  • Ability to perform lifting activities related to patients.
  • Exposed to radiation.
  • Ability to operate portable equipment.
  • Ability to deal with extremely ill patients.
  • Ability to communicate with patients.
  • Ability to adjust to flexible work hours.
  • Ability to participate on-call program and available to department needs with minimal notice.
  • Ability to do light, medium, or heavy lifting.
  • Ability to make independent professional decisions using good judgment skills.
  • Ability to practice high-quality patient care and technical competence.
  • Ability to function with minimal assistance in performing job activities.
  • Ability to demonstrate oral and written communication skills.
  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, such as film processing chemicals.

Ability to attend out-of-town site visits to view equipment.

  • This position will need to recognize needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients treated.
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact, the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015.
