The Practical Nursing Specialist role is designed to blend clinical expertise with theoretical understanding to effectively address the needs of patients and their families. This position plays a vital role in the healthcare team, focusing on the prevention of illness and injury, promoting wellness, and ensuring patient comfort. Additionally, this role provides guidance, education, and begins to take on leadership duties within the unit.

The Practical Nursing Specialist is responsible for delivering and meticulously documenting direct, age-appropriate care to patients or groups of patients, following medical directives and a comprehensive, multidisciplinary care plan. This position also involves the safe administration of prescribed medications, with an emphasis on recognizing potential incompatibilities and interactions.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Licensure, certification, or registration may vary based on the individual’s employment history and specific assignment; must possess LPN licensure in Virginia or be eligible.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment:
Current LPN Licensure in Virginia and AHA BLS Certification or equivalent.

Experience:
REQUIRED:
Varies based on specific duty assignment.

PREFERRED:
Experience as an LPN in an acute care environment or relevant area of practice.

Education/Training:
REQUIRED:
Graduation from a Board of Nursing approved School of Practical Nursing.

PREFERRED:
N/A

Independent Actions Required:
Adheres to documented physician or licensed independent provider orders, standards, and practice guidelines, organizing work to fulfill assignments.

Supervisory Responsibilities (if applicable):
N/A

Additional Position Requirements:
Practical Nursing Specialists are expected to work across all shifts, including weekends and holidays. Individual shift rotations and schedules will be coordinated with the Nurse Manager or Practice Manager.

Shift schedules may be adjusted as necessary to meet unit demands and requirements.

As applicable based on specific duty assignment.

Physical Requirements:
Physical: Lifting capabilities required.

Other:
Exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious materials.

Activities:
Prolonged standing, sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, etc.), and extensive overhead reaching.

Mental/Sensory:
Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, and logical thinking.

Emotional:
Steady pace, frequent and intense interactions with customers, potentially noisy environment, and adaptability to frequent changes.
