Job Summary

The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities seeks a highly skilled and experienced Legal Director to lead its Legal Advocacy and Education Program. This program aims to promote and defend the rights of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The successful candidate will have a strong background in disability law and experience in leading teams of attorneys and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program Leadership: Provide strategic direction and supervision to the Legal Advocacy and Education team, ensuring high-quality representation of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Legal Representation: Provide direct legal assistance to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including representation in court and advocacy before government agencies.
  • Policy and Advocacy: Work closely with the CEO to set the organization's policy agenda and positions it as an expert on legal issues impacting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Training and Education: Develop and deliver training and educational programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families, and service providers.
  • Grant Management: Ensure compliance with the terms of grants supporting the organization's legal activities, including adherence to targets for grant deliverables and submitting reports.
Requirements
  • JD from an Accredited Law School: Required
  • DC Bar Membership: Required
  • At Least 8 Years of Legal Experience: Required, including experience litigating in local or federal courts
  • Supervisory Experience: At least 3 years of experience supervising attorneys and ability to effectively direct and evaluate the work of others
  • Knowledge of Disability Laws: Experience with non-profit legal services and knowledge of relevant disability laws and other laws relevant to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
Benefits

The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities offers a competitive salary range of $110,000 – 125,000 and generous benefits, including employer-paid health and dental insurance, short and long-term disability, life insurance, contribution to a retirement plan, 25 days of paid time off, and 13 paid holidays.
