Position: Automation Controls Specialist

Role Summary:

The Automation Controls Specialist will be responsible for designing, developing, and programming upgrades and retrofits for automated equipment, ensuring alignment with both customer and internal specifications for legacy systems. This role requires a high level of expertise and the ability to lead controls engineering efforts on large, multi-module custom systems, with travel requirements of up to 75%.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct the development of control system architecture retrofits and enhance performance metrics.
  • Program control systems for various operational stations, including cam, servo, and pneumatic systems, along with testing and electrical devices.
  • Ensure that electrical designs are efficient, reliable, and cost-effective.
  • Innovate while adhering to ATS Automation standards and regulatory guidelines.
  • Research and specify suitable components for purchase and preferred use.
  • Create detailed electrical wiring diagrams, flow charts, panel layouts, and bills of materials (BOM), and manage release packages and schematic updates.
  • Engage in internal and client design reviews, installations, and service calls as necessary.
  • Provide accurate estimates for engineering hours required for retrofitting and upgrading existing machinery.
  • Guide electricians in wiring practices and compliance with codes, while supporting software validation processes.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to develop the most effective and economical solutions to design challenges.
  • Operate within project timelines and budget constraints.
  • Resolve issues in collaboration with Mechanical Builders, troubleshoot software problems, and maintain updated documentation.
  • Effectively communicate ideas and comprehend information in both verbal and written formats.
  • Work closely with mechanical engineering teams, demonstrating openness to diverse perspectives.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks and workspace efficiently.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, a related engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of experience in automation.
  • Proficiency in Allen Bradley PLCs, HMIs, servo control systems, and electrical design.
  • Familiarity with software tools such as Eplan, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with inspection and measurement tools, including scales, calipers, micrometers, multi-meters, and dB meters.

Job Specifications:

  • Travel is required up to 75% of the time.
  • Physical requirements include standing, walking, pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, and bending.
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently.
  • Normal visual acuity for reading instructions and viewing computer screens.
  • Normal hearing ability for understanding verbal instructions.
  • Work conditions involve a standard office environment with occasional exposure to high noise levels and physical hazards in manufacturing settings.
  • Capability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
