Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct laser laboratory compliance inspections and onsite safety assessments to ensure adherence to State regulatory requirements and other applicable standards.
  • Perform laser beam hazard evaluations, produce reports, and recommend protection measures for laser users, facilities, and the public.
  • Review and approve new laser purchases, collect and confirm laser emission parameters, and maintain records as necessary.
  • Provide general safety and compliance support to the Radiation and Laser Safety group, including radioactive materials, X-ray devices, radio-frequency emissions, sampling, surveys, and other activities as needed.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear or Radiation Science, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or Radiation Biology.
  • More than four years of full-time health physics or laser safety experience at an academic research institution.
  • Certification in one or more of the following: CHP, CSP, CLSO, CIH, or comparable certification.
  • USDOT, ICAO, IATA Hazardous Material Shipper's Certification.
  • Texas Commercial Driver License with hazardous material endorsement.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Applied or Basic Science, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
  • Two years of experience in environmental health and safety compliance.
  • Eligible to be certified in one of the following: Certified Health Physicist (CHP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
Working Conditions

This position requires a class 'C' operator's driver's license and the ability to work in a variety of environments, including standard office conditions, extreme temperatures, and confined spaces.

The University of Texas at Austin offers a competitive salary range of $61,032, depending on qualifications, and a comprehensive benefits package, including health benefits, retirement plan, and paid time off.
