Job Title: Senior Tax Specialist

Location: Remote or Hybrid (Flexible work hours, with in-office presence potentially once a month)

Compensation: $91, $137,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Includes a comprehensive benefits package.

About Us: JP Recruiting Agency is seeking a Senior Tax Specialist to join our growing team. This role will be responsible for preparing and filing US Federal & state utility, non-utility, sales/use, property, franchise, gross receipts, fuel, and excise tax returns. Additionally, this role will support tax accrual journal entries, assist with government audits, and interact with various levels of management across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Tax Filing & Compliance: Prepare or assist with filings for utility & non-utility tax, state, and local sales/use tax, state/local property tax, federal/state excise, franchise, fuel tax, business registrations, annual reports, tax exemption certificates, and other required filings.
  • Law & Regulation Review: Review jurisdictional information and tax research software for rate changes and law amendments, ensuring timely compliance.
  • Tax Strategy Development: Research applicable tax laws based on specific facts, develop strategies, and present recommendations to management.
  • SALT Participation: Engage in state and local tax (SALT) aspects of transactions, including due diligence, and pursue SALT savings opportunities, such as reverse audits and credit/incentive initiatives.
  • Operational Support: Partner with business units to address SALT considerations and identify potential tax savings in operational processes.
  • Audit & Reconciliation: Provide support for governmental audits, maintain audit schedules, manage external auditors, assist with audit negotiations, and implement audit findings.
  • Tax Account Reconciliation: Reconcile general ledger accounts, propose corrective entries, and prepare accrual data for monthly closes.
  • Process Improvements: Recommend improvements for tax-related processes and assist with any tax department projects as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting required; CPA or a Master's in Taxation is preferred.
  • Experience: 5+ years in tax accounting, preferably within the Big 4 or a corporate environment.
  • Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of tax statutes and demonstrated proficiency with tax software (e.g., Avelare, BNA/RIA Checkpoint, SAP, PeopleSoft, Workday, Microsoft Office, etc.).
  • Soft Skills: Ability to build relationships across the organization, work independently, and present complex ideas concisely in both written and verbal form.
  • Industry Experience: Utility industry experience is preferred.
