Communication Specialist Role

This position is under the supervision of the Pupil Services Division and the school administration within a dynamic urban educational environment. The Communication Specialist will collaborate with educators, guardians, and school leadership to formulate tailored strategies and plans. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of the linguistic and educational requirements of children, adolescents, and their families. A high level of cultural awareness, ongoing self-assessment, and innovative thinking are essential to effectively address student needs.

Key Responsibilities of the Communication Specialist
  • Provide comprehensive speech-language services across all educational levels, including Pre-K, elementary, middle, and high schools, ensuring no underserved populations.
  • Address a variety of communication disorders as outlined in the ASHA Scope of Practice and relevant regulations, supporting students with diverse needs in language, articulation, fluency, voice, and swallowing.
  • Assess the educational impact of communication disorders, addressing personal, social, emotional, academic, and vocational factors that influence educational success.
  • Contribute specialized knowledge to curriculum development, enhancing the linguistic foundations of learning for students with disabilities and those at risk of academic challenges.
  • Support literacy development by significantly impacting the educational outcomes of students with communication disorders and other learners facing difficulties.
  • Deliver culturally responsive services, ensuring all students receive high-quality support. Differentiate between language disorders and cultural/linguistic variations, socioeconomic influences, and prior educational experiences.
  • Assist students in meeting district and state performance standards.
  • Engage in proactive measures to prevent academic challenges, utilizing evidence-based practices in interventions.
  • Conduct assessments collaboratively to identify communication disorders and inform instructional strategies.
  • Implement interventions that are developmentally appropriate and tailored to individual learning needs, based on evidence-based decision-making.
  • Design and execute school-wide programs that provide a range of service delivery models in the least restrictive settings for students with disabilities.
  • Utilize data-driven decision-making processes to evaluate individual student progress and overall program effectiveness.
  • Ensure adherence to federal and state regulations, as well as local policies, in all professional activities, including IEP development and documentation.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Enhance the services provided by other professionals through teamwork and cooperation, working closely with educators, therapists, and administrators.
  • Foster partnerships with universities and community organizations to share knowledge and resources.
  • Engage families in the planning and implementation of educational strategies.
  • Build rapport with students, involving them in goal-setting and progress monitoring.
  • Advocate for appropriate programs and services, influencing policy development to promote best practices.
  • Participate in the professional development of new staff members.
  • Conduct training sessions for parents regarding communication development and disorders, promoting a language-rich environment.
  • Engage in research to support the use of evidence-based assessment and intervention methodologies.
