Job Summary

We are seeking a highly qualified Part-Time Faculty member to teach in the Communication Studies Department at Highline College. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses in communication studies, engaging in departmental initiatives, and maintaining competence in teaching and the discipline through professional development activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teaching: Teach courses in the Communication Studies Department, primarily in-person and hybrid courses on the main campus in Des Moines, WA.
  • Service: Engage in departmental, divisional, and college initiatives.
  • Professional Development: Maintain competence in teaching and the discipline through professional development activities.

  • Show Commitment to Student Learning: Plan, organize, and create an interactive, cooperative, and mutually respectful learning environment, incorporating research-based practices to teaching and assessment.
  • Challenge Learners Intellectually: Encourage students to ask questions, confront limits, recognize complexities, think critically, and challenge assumptions.
  • Practice Culturally Responsive Instruction: Design curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment that are relevant to students, value what students already know, and empower students to demonstrate knowledge in multiple ways as appropriate for the discipline.
  • Communicate Effectively: Convey information and expectations clearly, listen carefully, encourage students to communicate, and act with respect, enthusiasm, and empathy toward students.
  • Demonstrate Personal and Professional Integrity: Be professional, honest, and ethical in the selection and delivery of course content.
  • Assessment: Ability to assess student-learning outcomes and use assessment data to modify instruction.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree (or higher) in Communication Studies or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution (pending degrees must be verified by a letter from the granting institution).
Desired Qualifications
  • Community College Teaching Experience: Experience teaching in a community college setting.
  • Education or Professional Experience in Public Speaking, Introduction to Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Organizational Leadership: Experience in teaching or working in the areas of public speaking, introduction to communication, interpersonal communication, or organizational leadership.
  • Demonstrated Experience Working with Students from a Diversity of Backgrounds: Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Academic Training or Experience in Assessment and Curriculum Design: Experience in assessment and curriculum design.
