Position Overview
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington seeks qualified candidates for a full-time, non-tenure track faculty role at the level of Teaching Assistant Professor.
Focus Area
This position emphasizes Design and Manufacturing, particularly in the realm of Medical Devices and Technology. The successful candidate will engage in teaching across various Mechanical Engineering disciplines, with a focus on the design, construction, and evaluation of mechanical prototypes that address significant societal challenges, especially in Medical Technology.
Responsibilities
The Teaching Assistant Professor will:
- Instruct courses related to Mechanical Engineering, emphasizing prototype technology and core areas such as mechanics of materials and thermofluid sciences.
- Support the Capstone Project for senior undergraduate students, while also developing hands-on learning experiences for sophomore and junior undergraduates, as well as graduate students.
- Teach diverse topics including need and stakeholder analysis, ideation techniques, prototyping, ethics, technical communication, and engineering computation tools (e.g., MATLAB, LabVIEW).
- Foster an inclusive learning environment by integrating diverse perspectives into teaching methodologies and employing evidence-based practices to enhance learning outcomes for students from varied backgrounds.
- Collaborate with departmental colleagues and faculty across the university, contributing to graduate programs and mentoring graduate students.
Department Overview
The Mechanical Engineering department encompasses a wide range of research and teaching activities within the mechanical engineering field, including interdisciplinary initiatives in engineering medicine, robotics, materials science, advanced manufacturing, and alternative energy.
Qualifications
Applicants should possess a PhD or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, along with demonstrated expertise in developing and teaching courses in relevant areas such as design and manufacturing, mechanics of materials, and thermofluid sciences.
