Job Summary:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Commercialization Manager to join our team. As an entrepreneur, you will be responsible for enhancing technology licensing business volume by comprehensively managing our intellectual property portfolio.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop, protect, market, and license a portfolio of ORNL technologies to drive business growth.
  • Evaluate the intellectual property potential of new inventions and copyrights annually, collaborating with ORNL inventors, patent agents, and external law firms.
  • Identify commercial opportunities by assessing market applications, estimating market size, and comparing with competing technologies.
  • Select inventions for patenting and copyrights based on commercial potential and implement a marketing strategy aligned with the licensing plan.
  • Proactively drive intellectual property business volume by engaging potential licensees and negotiating license agreements.
  • Collaborate with inventors, sponsors, and licensees to propose, promote, and negotiate solutions or agreements.
  • Manage relationships with key research directorates and provide relevant training and outreach.
  • Assist with Material Transfer Agreements and Non-Disclosure Agreements.
  • Represent ORNL at local, regional, national, and international meetings and forums related to the technology portfolio.

Requirements:

  • MS degree in a physical science or engineering discipline and 4+ years of relevant experience, or PhD and 2+ years of relevant experience.
  • Exceptional written, interpersonal, communication, and negotiating skills.
  • Understanding of intellectual property law and contract law.
  • Ability to comprehend complex technical, business, and financial issues and assume responsibility for activities of considerable fiscal significance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a physical science or engineering discipline and 4+ years in technology transfer with an additional MBA.
  • Prior experience in an academic and/or scientific organizational setting.
  • Involvement in professional organizations dedicated to furthering the transition of scientific/technical developments to the commercial marketplace.
