Lead Engineer for Nuclear Fuel Systems

Volt is currently seeking a Remote Engineering Process Specialist for a prominent client in the nuclear technology sector. This organization is at the forefront of innovative nuclear solutions for energy and medical applications. Candidates should possess significant expertise in the design and qualification of equipment, along with experience in operation, maintenance, and fabrication of such systems. The Lead Engineer for Fuel Handling Systems will collaborate with a skilled team of engineers and scientists dedicated to the advancement of next-generation nuclear reactors and their associated fuel handling systems.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design nuclear fuel handling systems and equipment, ensuring alignment from initial requirements to final design.
  • Assist in the fabrication, construction, and testing phases of systems and equipment.
  • Create comprehensive design documentation, including requirements, system design descriptions, interface control documents, P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and calculations.
  • Identify and apply relevant design codes to plant systems, such as ASME, ANS, ASTM, ASHRAE, IEEE, NFPA, and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with various design disciplines (mechanical, instrumentation and controls, civil, and nuclear) to gather and develop essential plant design information and establish system design and performance criteria.
  • Document engineering design efforts through technical writing, including system design descriptions, equipment specifications, design reports, trade studies, and calculations/analyses.
  • Evaluate the technical validity of solutions proposed by team members and subcontractors through participation in design reviews.
  • Initiate and oversee testing programs, providing support during test execution, analysis of results, and reporting.
  • Support licensing activities related to Safety Analysis Reports.
Qualifications:
  • Education: A B.S. degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Systems Engineering is preferred. Other engineering disciplines may be considered with relevant experience. Advanced degrees may substitute for years of experience.
  • A minimum of three years in system and/or process design is essential.
  • Experience in the nuclear sector, particularly with fuel handling systems, is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Strong technical writing, documentation, and communication skills are required.
  • Experience adhering to quality standards in design activities, such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a creative approach to challenges.
  • Capability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously within a workweek.
  • The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, capable of leading a design team with minimal supervision to address complex issues.
  • Integrity, open communication, and a commitment to fostering teamwork are essential qualities.
  • The specific title and starting level will be determined based on qualifications.
