Job Summary

Radiation Therapists at CARTI play a vital role in administering, simulating, and recording radiation treatments to patients as prescribed by radiation oncologists. They are responsible for accurately delivering prescribed doses, imaging tumor volumes, and outlining the corresponding targets on patients' surfaces.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer, simulate, and record radiation treatments according to physician's orders and departmental guidelines.
  • Determine and prepare set-ups within established parameters, calculate monitor units, and record patient treatment information in charts while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Perform daily warm-up and start-up procedures of equipment, quality control checks, and notify proper personnel of equipment malfunctions and/or adverse conditions.
  • Communicate with patients and families regarding routine procedures during radiation therapy, including appointments, skin care, treatment field care, and proper attire.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs and treatment problems, recommend interventions, and act in accordance with physician practices and departmental policies while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Investigate problems or unsatisfactory procedures and recommend possible solutions.
  • Construct patient treatment aids, bolus materials, positioning, and immobilization devices, and check for suitability and accuracy.
  • Perform checks on patient charts for accuracy and proper documentation according to established procedures.
  • Schedule patients for daily treatments.
  • Maintain quality control of patient charts and treatment parameters by implementing guidelines on a regular basis.
  • Maintain room cleanliness, linens, and necessary supplies in treatment rooms and notify proper personnel of areas needing attention.
  • Evaluate accessories for damage and coordinate repairs.
  • Evaluate, teach, and monitor the clinical and didactic education of radiation therapy and diagnostic students.
  • Monitor and adhere to general radiation safety guidelines.
  • Implement new processes regarding EMR updates and equipment updates.
Requirements

This position requires completion of an accredited program in radiation therapy technology. Current registration as a radiation therapist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or eligibility with a passing score within 360 days from date of employment is also required. Additionally, licensure as a radiation therapist with the Arkansas Department of Health and BLS certification are necessary.

This role demands skill and proficiency in the technical field of radiation therapy technology, as well as knowledge of institution and departmental policies, procedures, chart coding, scheduling, physicians' protocols, equipment operation, maintenance, safety, and quality control guidelines. The ability to solve practical problems, deal with concrete variables, and interpret instructions in written, oral, or schedule form is also essential.

Maintaining confidentiality, interacting with patients, physicians, and other departmental personnel, and adapting to frequent changes in procedures and policies are crucial aspects of this position. The ability to use tact and diplomacy in making recommendations, reporting errors or problems, securing information, and discussing patient treatments is also necessary.
