Position Overview:


The Clinical Support Specialist plays a vital role in assisting Physicians, Mid-Level Practitioners, and Registered Nurses in the assessment, management, and care of patients within an outpatient environment.

This position is accountable for ensuring efficient patient flow, maintaining the cleanliness and organization of examination and treatment areas, and executing fundamental tasks such as measuring vital signs and conducting point-of-care tests.

Additionally, the Certified Clinical Support Specialist will administer intramuscular injections, immunizations, and small volume nebulizer treatments, as well as over-the-counter medications under the supervision of a Physician.

The individual in this role embodies the mission, vision, and values of Rush and adheres to all policies and procedures, including compliance with Rush University Medical Group Customer Service Standards.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates and maintains a smooth patient flow.

Conducts Patient Intake:
measures vital signs, height and weight, reason for visit, interim medical history, allergies, medication lists, and other necessary interventions.

  • Prepares patients for examinations based on their reason for visit.
  • Assists providers during procedures and supports patients throughout.
  • Reviews appointment schedules to ensure all patient records are accessible for visits.
  • Checks patient charts to confirm that all ancillary reports and required documentation are ready for the provider at the time of the visit.
  • Performs basic laboratory and testing procedures in accordance with established standards.
  • Conducts phlebotomy and EKGs.
  • Administers immunizations as prescribed by the Physician.
  • Delivers RUMG approved intramuscular or subcutaneous medications after competency has been assessed, verified, and documented.
  • Executes nebulizer treatments in the clinic setting after competency has been assessed, verified, and documented.
  • Performs Tuberculin skin testing as ordered by the Physician.
  • Demonstrates appropriate techniques specific to patient populations.
  • Records administration of over-the-counter medications and/or other medications in the electronic medical record per policy or protocol.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of examination rooms, treatment areas, and workstations.
  • Communicates with patients regarding test results and medical instructions under the direction of a Physician.
  • Processes medication refills under the direction of a Physician or protocol.
  • Documents patient care information in the outpatient medical record according to established standards.
  • Assists with scheduling patient tests, procedures, and follow-up appointments.
  • Participates in the care, cleaning, and sterilization of medical equipment and instruments.
  • Manages inventory of medical and linen supplies.
  • Ensures quality control for medical equipment.
  • Provides coverage to other clinical areas as needed.
  • Engages in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintains compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) standards and other regulatory requirements.
  • May have unit-specific responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Clinical Medical Assistant Certification by AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NAHP, or NHA required upon hire (includes principles and techniques of injections and medication administration).
  • Graduate of an Accredited Medical Assistant Program required (unless hired prior to February 1).
  • Current CPR certification required upon start date.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional customer service abilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

Preferred:
  • One year of clinical experience.
  • Experience in phlebotomy.
  • Familiarity with Epic Ambulatory.
