Job Summary

The University of South Alabama's department of Research Education and Training – College of Medicine is seeking an experienced professional to fill the role of Assistant Director, Office of Research Education and Training (ORET). This position is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) PhD program, managing undergraduate and other student researchers and postdoctoral trainees, and providing academic advising to BMS graduate students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the BMS PhD program, including coordinating the admissions process, updating applications, and communicating with applicants.
  • Provide academic advising to BMS graduate students, including advising on lab rotations, course selection, registration, academic standing, degree requirements, and career/professional/personal development.
  • Coordinate the GradPALs (peer mentoring) program and plan and coordinate professional development seminars for all BMS students.
  • Research and implement new initiatives to increase graduate student retention and manage the ORET budget.
  • Coordinate communications among students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, staff, and relevant University offices, and collect, maintain, and analyze student and postdoctoral fellow data for assessment purposes.
  • Ensure all BMS students receive their monthly stipend and that all reappointments are submitted in a timely manner by departments.
  • Provide support to departments and the COM Business Office with non-COM student researchers, interns, and visiting scholars, and maintain an up-to-date database of all non-COM researchers.
  • Coordinate wellness training sessions to promote wellness with all Whiddon COM trainees and schedule, write, and distribute Wellness Wednesday emails to BMS Students and Postdoctoral Fellow.
Requirements

A bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and three years of related experience are required. A master's degree is preferred.
