Job Title: School Outreach Worker - Youth Enrichment Services

CAMBA is a community of staff, volunteers, clients, donors, neighbors, and partners working together to build an inclusive New York City. Job Summary:

The School Outreach Worker will engage school-aged youth in programming and supportive services that promote positive youth development and change the culture around violence. This role will work in and around schools in neighborhoods with high community violence, recruiting and engaging vulnerable youth who may be at risk for interpersonal violence or have experienced community violence.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Outreach and market the program within the school
  • Engage with students during arrival, lunch periods, and dismissal to build relationships
  • Provide a visible staff presence around the school and on common routes to public transportation
  • Diffuse conflict between students, engage in conflict mediation, and conduct crisis intervention as needed
  • Coordinate with school administrators and local NYPD precinct to identify hot spots around the school
  • Assist in organizing responses to conflicts that occur in and around the school
  • Prepare marketing materials and market the program within the school community
  • Attend and facilitate social/peer support events
  • Review documentation establishing clients' eligibility for program and make file copies
  • Assist clients in completing intake applications and forms, and as needed complete applications for benefits and entitlements
  • Create and maintain client files
  • Conduct initial intake or assessment of clients and clients' families and/or periodic reassessments
  • Follow-up with clients and referral organizations regarding client contact and progress
  • Work with clients to break through barriers to client goals and assist clients in advocating for themselves and moving toward self-sufficiency
  • Recommend and implement strategies to persuade clients to participate more fully in the process
  • Act as client liaison/client advocate with outside organizations regarding education, healthcare, housing, etc.
  • Monitor clients' progress toward their goals via regularly scheduled telephone contact and/or face-to-face office visits and document via progress notes
  • Recommend closing of cases in which clients have achieved primary goals and maintained stability for a period of months, or have not demonstrated a willingness to participate in the process, or have become ineligible for services
  • Provide all required information for weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual reports
  • As needed, conduct client periodic re-assessments, schedule appointments for clients with referral organizations, and escort clients safely to and from school
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) and one year of applicable experience, or Associate's degree (A.S) and two years of applicable experience, or High School Diploma or HSE and three years of applicable experience
  • Relevant experience as described above, preferably in a mid-sized organization
  • Good written and verbal communication
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong knowledge of the Canarsie community
  • Flexibility with working a flexible schedule, including morning, evening, and weekends as needed, and be prepared for various outdoor weather conditions during the workday
Compensation:

$27.47/hour
