Senior Director of Emergency Services

Organizational Mission:

Father Bill's & MainSpring is dedicated to eradicating and preventing homelessness in Southern Massachusetts through initiatives that offer both emergency and long-term housing solutions, alongside programs that equip individuals with essential skills, employment opportunities, and necessary services. Our goal is to assist those facing homelessness or at risk of it in achieving self-sufficiency.

As a progressive and vibrant social service organization, Father Bill's & MainSpring specializes in emergency and permanent housing, job training, and prevention services for individuals and families in need. Our strategic objectives for the upcoming years focus on expanding affordable, permanent supportive housing, enhancing care models for families experiencing homelessness, and fostering improved community relations.

Role Summary:

The Senior Director of Emergency Services will be responsible for overseeing all programmatic services delivered through emergency shelter initiatives across Southern Massachusetts, covering over 40 communities. This role emphasizes a proactive approach to homelessness, prioritizing diversion, rapid re-housing, and progressive engagement strategies while adhering to a harm reduction and low-threshold philosophy. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a deep understanding and compassion for individuals facing homelessness and related challenges. With the support of a team of Directors and managers, this position will oversee more than 100 staff members, managing all administrative, compliance, and service delivery activities associated with various public and private grants and contracts, including rapid re-housing, diversion, and rental assistance.


Key Responsibilities

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all programs and services are implemented within a harm reduction, person-centered, and low-threshold framework.
  • Engage in strategic planning and program development related to service delivery, contract fidelity, and program evaluation.
  • Contribute to the formulation and revision of agency and program-specific policies and protocols; lead the execution of new or updated policies and protocols concerning participants and staff.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of services and programs offered in emergency shelters, street outreach, diversion, and prevention initiatives.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with state and federally funded programs and the administration of various rental assistance initiatives.
  • Build and sustain relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, preserving the organization’s strong community reputation. Represent Father Bill's & MainSpring at community events and meetings.
  • Bring strategic, visionary, and collaborative thinking to the organization’s programs and operations, implementing initiatives that advance the mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Provide strategic leadership to a team of over 100 staff members, focusing on performance management, retention, engagement, and professional development.

Financial Oversight

  • Generate regular reports on progress, budgets, and expenditures related to departmental activities, including rapid re-housing and contract spending.
  • Monitor fund balances for assigned programs and related financial activities to ensure compliance with budgetary limits and fiscal practices.
  • Collaborate with the Finance team to ensure the organization operates on a solid fiscal foundation.
  • Participate in the annual budgeting process, ensuring that programs, projects, and operations are managed in accordance with budgetary guidelines.

Program Management

  • Ensure effective management of Father Bill's & MainSpring programs, collaborating with a team of Program Directors to maintain appropriate internal controls and procedures.
  • Work with the management team to ensure adequate staffing and support for programs.
  • In partnership with the Program Development department, oversee the monitoring and evaluation of emergency services, utilizing timely reporting to ensure compliance with all contracts and program goals.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and Human Resources to address staff and program participant-related situations, making informed decisions and recommendations as necessary.
  • Facilitate rapid access to housing resources for individuals and families experiencing homelessness, including permanent supportive housing or temporary rental assistance.
  • Promote collaboration and teamwork among programs, operations, housing administration, and property management services across regions, maintaining a unified focus on achieving housing solutions for those experiencing homelessness.

Qualifications & Skills:

Essential Requirements:

  • A Master's Degree in a human service-related field is preferred, along with 5-8 years of progressively responsible experience within a nonprofit organization. A minimum of 5 years of prior supervisory experience is required.
  • Exceptional critical thinking and decision-making abilities, coupled with excellent project management and communication skills.
  • A strategic vision and the capacity to mentor and develop leadership within the organization.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships and influence multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading multiple teams effectively.
  • Expected to report any concerns regarding company policies and procedures on privacy to designated management personnel without fear of retaliation.
