Visual Communication Specialist

As a Visual Communication Specialist, you will be responsible for executing a comprehensive range of graphic design and printing tasks. Your role will involve creating high-quality publication materials using industry-standard graphic design software and various reprographic equipment, ensuring excellent customer service at designated service points.
Key Responsibilities
The following duties are typical for this position:
1. Execute a full spectrum of graphic design responsibilities, including art direction, creative development, pre-press production, and quality assurance for all requested publications.
2. Organize and manage graphic arts projects; design and produce publication-quality materials; effectively edit and revise existing publications; create layouts for brochures, newsletters, business cards, reports, digital ads, and more, utilizing industry-standard software while considering style, arrangement, and color theory.
3. Provide technical guidance and training to colleagues regarding graphic services.
4. Ensure client satisfaction by providing digital or printed proofs prior to mass production.
5. Estimate time, materials, and personnel required for large projects; determine whether jobs will be completed in-house or outsourced, and obtain vendor quotes as necessary.
6. Operate various reprographic equipment, including computers, printers, and digital cameras.
7. Maintain quality control of all printed materials to uphold a consistent appearance and format, ensuring the integrity of the City’s branding elements.
8. Stay updated with advancements in graphic design software and production techniques; research and implement new software versions and develop templates for cross-application use.
9. Maintain accurate records of completed jobs and manage various files.
Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:
- Graphic design principles, including typography, balance, and color theory.
- Techniques for copy preparation, composition, and layout.
- Industry-standard graphic design software (Adobe Suite).
- Printing operations and techniques, including color processes and file formats.
- Office procedures and record-keeping practices.
Ability to:
- Create effective layouts that convey a professional appearance across various media.
- Utilize multiple graphic design software efficiently to produce diverse publication materials.
- Operate office and reprographic equipment effectively.
- Adapt to new technologies and learn new systems quickly.
- Communicate effectively with clients and provide technical assistance.
Education and Experience
A combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge and skills is required. Typically, this includes:
- Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by coursework in graphic design or a related field.
- A minimum of three years of experience in developing graphic materials for visual communication.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
This position requires the ability to work in both an office and print shop environment, with exposure to noise and ink. Candidates must be able to stand or sit for extended periods, lift moderate weights, and operate equipment requiring fine motor skills.
