When obstacles arise related to materials, workforce, equipment availability, etc., this individual must swiftly devise alternative strategies to address these challenges. A solid understanding of engineering and construction is essential to effectively bridge the gap between Chesapeake Shipbuilding's engineering team and the production trades. The role involves direct interaction with over ten distinct trades engaged in ship production, necessitating a fundamental understanding of each to meet job expectations. Additional responsibilities include providing engineering support to skilled trades and performing various office tasks typical of a small office environment.

KEY FUNCTIONS & TASKS:

  • Possess a foundational understanding of metal fabrication, welding techniques, electrical distribution, pipe fitting, plumbing, painting, insulation, sheet metal work, and diesel machinery.
  • Regularly assess the work of skilled trades and collaborate with the Quality Control department to facilitate necessary corrections.
  • Conduct regular meetings, both formal and informal, with trade foremen and contractors to establish clear expectations regarding responsibilities and completion timelines.
  • Coordinate daily scheduling of trades to optimize workflow and prevent conflicts.
  • Identify and manage critical path items to ensure timely delivery of vessels.
  • Provide constructive feedback to trade foremen and their teams regarding the quality of work performed.
  • Engage and negotiate with vendors and subcontractors to achieve production objectives.
  • Monitor material flow to avert work stoppages due to missing supplies.
  • Relay feedback from trades to the engineering department to enhance the quality of drawings provided to production teams.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and, upon approval, oversee their implementation until completion.
  • Understand and apply standards outlined in 46 CFR T, K, F, and J, as well as ABS Steel Vessel Rules.
  • Act as a liaison for inspectors from regulatory bodies when present at the shipyard.
  • Solicit quotes for equipment and parts necessary for production and fabrication.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
