Position Overview

The School of Arts, Letters, & Sciences is in search of Adjunct Instructors specializing in Physics.

In this capacity, the adjunct instructor will be responsible for educating groups of students within a designated core discipline. Key duties include engaging learners, providing constructive feedback, and motivating students to meet course and program objectives pertinent to the discipline. This role involves collaboration with fellow educators in the field, the Department Chair, and the Dean.

Core Responsibilities

The role of Adjunct Instructor encompasses teaching courses within a designated core discipline.

Performance Evaluation

Performance metrics for teaching include, but are not limited to:
  • Adjunct Instructors will communicate with their assigned students through a welcome letter one week prior to the course commencement, when feasible, but always within the initial week of the course.
  • Adjunct Instructors will create and share a video introduction to be included in each course.
  • Adjunct Instructors will respond to all student inquiries within two calendar days, which may require weekend responses. Exceptions apply during personal time off or recognized holidays.
  • All communication with students will occur through the University’s learning management system (LMS), designated University systems, and assigned email accounts.
  • Adjunct Instructors will notify Student Services in the LMS as soon as they identify a student who is not actively participating in the course.
  • Adjunct Instructors will reach out to students via email and phone to encourage re-engagement as soon as participation issues are identified.
  • As supported by technology, Adjunct Instructors will hold a minimum of two one-hour synchronous office hour sessions weekly, with times posted in each course.
  • Adjunct Instructors will provide high-quality feedback to students, which includes:
    • substantive content focus
    • sharing knowledge, resources, and engaging in dialogue with students
    • tracking changes to ensure proper use of mechanics
    • providing a summary statement at the beginning or end of documents with key observations
    • communicating in a supportive manner
Research Expectations

Adjunct Instructors are expected to fulfill the University’s scholarship requirements as outlined in the Faculty Handbook. They are encouraged to apply for various initiatives funded by the University to promote research and scholarship. Responsibilities include:
  • Maintaining a record of scholarly activities appropriate for a doctoral-granting institution
  • Contributing to the knowledge base of their discipline
Adherence to University Policies

Adjunct Instructors are required to understand, acknowledge, and comply with University policies as stated in the Team Member Handbook and Faculty Handbook.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:
  • A Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Physics, Geophysics, Biophysics, Engineering, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution is required.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States is mandatory.
  • In-person teaching for the San Diego campus is required.
  • Experience in college-level and in-person teaching is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with diverse student populations is preferred.
  • Experience with innovative teaching methods related to the discipline is preferred.

Compensation:

Hourly Rate: $28.89
